Are all the pumps basically interchangable between trucks, I know some have the "torque screw" but since I'm N/A it doesnt really have any use for me.

I have a DB2-5013 pump on my truck currently, What model pump did you get from uhaul oldbull?

I must eat crow...I read your sig and saw Hypermax and I thought he's got a turbo, Moose pump or similar is what he needs, now I read it's N/A, so yeah any of these pumps will be fine, but you probably should stay away from the Moose or DPS turbo cal pumps until you can afford a turbo (if you even want one). A stock 7.3 pump and you'll be in great shape.

And regarding psychohawk's post. I'd rather let Mel say what he has done to the pumps to make them work their magic, of course some of the tricks the Moose has are proprietary and I don't blame him for not sharing. I asked for examples myself of why the Baby Moose (High Quality stock rebuild) is any better than el cheapo rebuilds. He gave the example of the advance piston, how his guy checks it very thoroughly and unless he's sure it's ok it gets replaced. Wholesale rebuild kits are also not all created equal. I was told by another builder who seems reputable, has all the certifications and a lot of experience that the aftermarket rebuild kit is great except for the shaft seals which he insists should be Stanadye only. I don't know if Mel's guy does that with the Baby Moose and Moose but you are in fact paying for time, attention to detail, no cut corners, and the assurance it'll be right and you're dealing with someone of known good character and reliability if you do have a problem. A good stock build is available at plenty of other shops but not much cheaper as you found, and then you have to do the legwork to find the shop and verify it meets your demands. I went the local shop, Stanadyne authorized dealer route and it was just under $400 plus core charges. Did they cut some corners, maybe, but it's still clicking, holds timing and no obvious leaks after 28,000 miles or so.

I read

about the Baby Moose, If I read it right its about $575.00 for an average price, there are variables involved, if your pump needs more work it will cost more. Compared to what you will pay elsewhere phazertwo offered you use of his IP for a core, it might be worth considering for you.

I don't know much so research anything I say throughly

Anybody know where Mel is? I sent him a PM 4 days ago and have yet to hear back from him, I think I'm going to order a Uhaul IP and cross my fingers, I get to keep my core so I could always get a Baby Moose built in the future if the uhaul pump isnt cutting the mustard.

Yup, I just got off the phone with him, I saw this post and gave him a call. He is on his way back from West Virgina. Out of town on a job for the week putting in 16 hour days so he has not been able to get on the board all week.

He said that his turnorund for a pump has been about a week, so if you want to talk to him about a pump I will PM you his phone number and you can give him a call while he is traveling. Maybee you can work something out.

PM heading your way,..

You can also buy the Uhaul pump... Have them ship it directly to Mel... Then you get a moose or baby moose built off a newly rebuild pump... No parts "should" be needing a replacement plus... It will tell everyone here just how well the Uhaul pump is or isn't rebuilt...:sly;Sweet

Sorry guys... I got on as as soon as I could here. They shipped me down to North Carolina to do an office move, and I've been out of touch. Got back to a pretty full inbox, and I think I've replied to everyone who sent me something. As for Baby Moose pumps... yea, most of my pumps seldom go up to or over $700. And the guys who have posted their prices, those ARE legit and do represent the average. Of course if you want a "Moose Pump" at a discount, you can get on ebay and buy from our old friendly neighborhood spider man Jsnap. He's doing the stump preacher thing, attracting anyone who will listen. He's got one listed for $450 and claims it is from my builder. Thing is, I've never gotten a pump that was that low, so it's either used, or he's selling it at a loss. :dunno

I'm going to order the Uhaul pump tonight, I'm sure it'll do the trick for now, I dont predict a turbo in the near future and If i happen to slap one on I'll be sure to send the pump your way Mel.
Thanks guys,

Matt

I've been thinking about getting one of the Uhaul pumps and maybe having Mel go through it at some point if I had some extra money...or maybe just running it as-is :dunno I know I'd lose the torque screw but I don't really see how it makes much of a difference in anything anyway.

My truck's at 110K on the original IP, and I've been wanting to do an IP/injector job and see if I can get some better fuel mileage (among all the other things I gotta get to on this truck eventually...like replacing the radiator and doing some bodywork...ugh)

Mel, were I to buy one of the uhaul pumps and send it to you, do you think it'd still run around $500?

I'm interested in this also, I cant see a fresh rebuild needing $500 worth of work unless its a really bad reman but what do I know.

It sounds like you may have a problem that Uhaul doesn't ship anywhere but in the US. Maybe I have misunderstood.

Go to an IH truck dealership....My local dealer told me $399 CDN plus taxes for a genuine reman IH pump with a core....Hard to be the real deal with IH warranty.
