Rebuilding my ZF

I need to get my reverse gear fixed but can't find anyone to help rebuild it....SO it looks like I am gonna have to tackle this one. I have some wrenching experiance but not much and I have no experience with a tranny of any kind. Is it even remotely possible to do this myself or am I gonna have to take it to a shop? I want to avoid shops at all costs because as of right now I can't even come close to being able to afford that.

The trans is going to get a new reverse synchro and possibly new reverse gear, along with any other part that is worn and has to deal with 1st, 2nd, or reverse. If I can do it myself it should only cost around $100-$150

Find you some good schematics on the transmission if you plan on tackling it yourself...

You do have some sort of manual or book correct? I took a quick look at my factory DVD manual a couple of months ago, and there is no way you are even going to get it apart without knowing the sequence to follow to get the case apart.

let me give you a good tip i had to learn from experience, before you split the case make sure you pull the two little freeze plug thingys from in front of the shifter housing and get the little springs and balls out of there or you will have difficulty's later and make sure you take both the allen head bolts out of the side of the case that holds the balancer shaft in and also set the tranny on two 4x4's in a v shape and set the tail end down when you pull your case apart or else all your parts will fall out on the ground doing it the other way sitting on the bellhousing. if you have any other ?'s just ask i have don like 3 of these completely

also replace the 5th and reverse shift fork and your reverse problem will be solved. along with the other parts you listed

Wow... I'm going to say don't try it. These units feed all the parts in from the front but inside you have plenty of small springs and balls that will pop out. then not having any idea where they came from makes reassembly tuff. Ebay has several tool kits specifically designed for these trand overhauls. I have no idea what you will need in those tool kits. I know Towcat has taken them apart and its no easy deal....

My trans guy charges between $400-500 for rebuilding a ZF if you bring it to him. That includes bearings, seals and syncros. Add $250 if you bring him the whole truck

If that all He charges to replace all the wear parts on the tranny I would definitely let Him do it, when I did mine the price was $1300 for a worn but working transmission. Did it Myself and never looked back.
