So I recently purchased a 86 F250 with the 6.9 ext cab 4x4, 5 speed , gear vendor and unknown turbo kit from an auction for $540 +fees. I knew going into this the truck would not start i know it's not spinning fast enough and questionable air in lines but sounds like it has compression. I am not to worried about the start problem right now my biggest concern is there was ALOT of oil setting on the intake valley gasket at first I thought well the turbo drain fitting was bad or came loose causing excess oil to collect. But upon closer inspection the turbo drain has been ran to the oil pan I believe. I am still waiting for some title work to be completed before I take possession of the truck so thought I would start training my brain to think diesel and gasser. Can the IP leak that much oil around the seal or would the IP gear cover be the biggest culprit?

by the picture, not only does the IP gear housing looks like its leaking, but it looks like the CDR residue is leaking out of the intake.
best bet is to pressure wash the hell out of it, and find where it leaks.

delete that air filter, they let dirt in!

welcome to the forum.
please take a couple of hours and read the tech articles! full of information! read it from the last page to the first.

I agree with IDIoit on the air cleaner. They do let in small dirt particles that will wear out the intake turbine in short order. Get rid of it.

That is definitely on my short list. Last time I was with the truck I put some absorbent mat down into valley to absorb some of the collected oil up. I hope it's enough to pin point the leak before the power washer is required.

I failed to mention I also acquired a 7.3 with Ats turbo setup. Does this thing not have a waste gate? Or do they just let the turbo max out on its boost potential?

Generally they don't generate enough boost to waste any lol

If you do hose it down, remove glowplugs and crank it over first.
I would also change the oil.
Don't wanna take any chances.

Welcome to the forum. Best advice is purchase a gear reduction starter. then if.. And only IF you have good cables, connections and batteries. you will spin that engine faster than you can count the revolutions.
I don't know what make this turbo is but I recall they were something way back in the mid 80's. They require a special exhaust manifold and a cross over pipe from the passenger side to operate well. they fell out of populairty fast too because of the newer Banks, Hypermax and ATS kits available. This turbo is not waste gated. The faster you crank a diesel the better it starts. These are compression ignition engines. they generate very high cranking air temps to ignite the diesel fuel. You are compressing the volume of a 4.110 stroke with a bore size of around 4.000 into a squish area that is about 40 thousands. So compressing air fast generates plenty of heat.Diesel needs around 940 degrees to ignite so you have to make that much heat. Glow plugs are for cold starts and nothing more. Best remove the plugs and see if they are autolite or champions. Nothing is better than Motorcraft ZD9 for the 7.3 or ZD1A for the 6.9 engines. Also the ZD9 plug is a bullet connector where the ZD1A is the spade connector.
My bet is the oil you see in the pan under the intake is from a bad fuel return line or cap. Those are the fuel that is returned from the injectors after it has cooled the injector. Nearly 85% of the fuel that goes thru the injection pump is used as coolant and lube for the pump and injectors. Our engines use very little fuel to run. Bleeding the injectors shows barely any fuel too so do not expect to see huge amounts of it spraying out an open injector line when bleeding. Might want to check the filter for being plugged or really dirty too.

I think I may go out to the lot were the truck is with some good batteries and fresh cables and see if I can get it to at least try to start. Think I'll take some fresh diesel in a can as well. I did check the lift pump and it shot fuel across the engine bay so I'd say that ok. The fuel that shot out was green but seemed to have some clear to it. Water in the fuel maybe?
I did crack the injector lines open and cranked it with just a drop on each revolution sounds like this is normal. I think I will pick up a fuel filter as well any brand I should avoid?

Forgot to mention as well it has new tires and newer wheel as well. For $540 for the truck I'm not scared of throwing some money at this truck will be cheaper than a $50k new one.

Do0n't use any Fram filters. They are not very good. I prefer the motorcraft 1995 oil filter. I also use the motorcraft fuel filters but don't recall the number.
