Well finally found my oil leak that is destroing my driveway (HOA) is raising h**l about the stains on my driveway any ways i digress i was woandering is it possiable to remove the oil pan without removing the eng or lifting it??

you DONT have to remove it--but it does have to be jacked up--been there three times!!!! to remove pan--have to take pickup loose off of pump--then it will all come down--

is it the rear main seal or the pan gasket?

If the rear seal is leaking it will not do you any good to remove the oil pan (unless the oil pan gasket is leaking too). You will have to remove the transmission and flywheel and then pull the seal and install another.

If its the rear seal you will have to pull the transmission. You might want to pick up a flat drip tray from an auto store. They measure about 2'x4' and about $25, you could slide it under the leak for now.

I would also like to add that I once had a truck that I thought was leaking from the rear main because it looked like the oil was coming from there. After further investigation, I found that the drain plug was actually leaking because the little copper washer was wore out. The oil had "wicked" it's way up the dust so that it looked like it was coming from the rear main. I replaced the drain plug washer and it never leaked again. Maybe you can luck out like that.

No its not the drain plug just chnged that thinking it was but no and sorry its not the rear main its the oil pan rear seal.

Gotta love them HOA's. Took me a long time to find a house here that didnt have an association but also was not in a run down neighborhood. Mine leaks too, anyone know what to use to get that crap off of concrete?

You can try muriatic acid or some Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) from Lowes.

If the only reason you are trying to fix the leak is because of the idiots in your HOA, I say FORGET THAT! I'd just throw a drip pan, a piece of cardboard, a piece of rubber conveyor belt, or whatever under the truck and tell them to kiss you A$$!

The Ford service manual covers pulling the pan pretty well. If your going to do the jack it up and drop the oil pickup tube bit, you might want to consider a 2" body lift if your at all doing so. It will give you a ton of extra room. As for the job as a whole, I'd say this is a great opportunity to pull the engine and really dig into some other stuff. Maybe repaint the motor, re-dress your front core support bushings (always an ignored item that shouldn't be) change your oil cooler O-rings, and do any clutch service that might be outstanding. Some times these PITA repairs can be seen as an opportunity instead of an encumberance.

really surprised wasent the oil pan seal at all was the oring on the dip stick tube replaced and all is better now i am going to take mels advise as soon as i finish putting my other 7.3 together im going to pull this one and address the core support and put in the new motor. thanks for all the sugestions and tips.

I dump a little (actaully a good amount to leave a small puddle)gasoline on the oil, brush it in and spread some speedy dri over it wait a till it dries and sweep it up.It sucks all the oil up and doesnt damage the concrete,
