The Ford service manual covers pulling the pan pretty well. If your going to do the jack it up and drop the oil pickup tube bit, you might want to consider a 2" body lift if your at all doing so. It will give you a ton of extra room. As for the job as a whole, I'd say this is a great opportunity to pull the engine and really dig into some other stuff. Maybe repaint the motor, re-dress your front core support bushings (always an ignored item that shouldn't be) change your oil cooler O-rings, and do any clutch service that might be outstanding. Some times these PITA repairs can be seen as an opportunity instead of an encumberance.
