This!!! I dont know who decided you needed to go 30mph in reverse, but not be able to back up a trailer in a truck, but the reverse in the ZF5 is terrible. Any size trailer or any hill I am backing up I put it in 4 lo. way more control and no more burning clutch.
The T-19 in my 86 4 X 1 is like that also.
30 MPH in reverse to back up to the Trailer sucks.
Some times I like the fast reverse if Iam backing around the house over to the shops etc....
Also the T-19 does not have the Granny low, which is OK for the most part, but times I do wish I had a lower first gear.
With the higher first gear, I start out in it to get rolling, then shift to third. I can start in second, but just easier on the Clutch in my way of thinking. Also have the 3:55 Diff., which I like, but man starting out on a hill with a load, really need to play with the Clutch to get her going.
Installing a transfer case just for the lower gear for backing, seem like a great idea, but what does it do for mileage turning the Transfer Case? Or is it just straight through W/O any parasitic drag?
I do have the GV for the OD and or split gears, but also a 3 spd Brownie with Deep Under, Direct and OD. Wonder what parasitic drag the Brownie would Have? But I would be cool with the 2 Sticks. Another anti theft device for sure.
Edit:
I should have said I have the 2 above units, but neither one installed.
Was going to put the Brownie in the 86, but single cab, and the front Fuel tank is too long.
Picked it up with shifter, jack shaft etc... for $275.
Probably install it in the 85, as it has the extended cab.
