ok, i am wanting a intercooler for my truck for the turbo setup to go on, the turbo is a holset hx35w off a 5.9 cummins, question is do you think if i got an intercooler off a semi truck (not a huge one of coarse look for one off a f-750 with the cummins in it) do you think that would be ok? or would there be too much lag? i can get semi intercoolers for about 30 bucks at my local pick and pull, they have a heavy truck section and damn good prices.

Well, you have to run your own pressure pipes for most IC's anyway... if the measurements are right, I say go for it. The Super Duty IC's are pretty huge anyway.

i was thinking the same, only thing was most of the intercoolers out there were the size of my radiator or bigger LOL, i seen cummins out there that had the same size turbo as the holset i got from you with an adapter to go to the huge inlet on the intercooler, was thinking about getting that and going with it, will have lag but question is how much and how much boost will i lose if i do

for years I was worried about losing boost when I added the cooler, it added boost to my setup, had 10psi 12 max at 80+ mph
Now I peg the gauge at 15psi as soon as the throttle makes it down.
I dont even know how much actual boost it makes now.
I had the PSD cooler but used another smaller one that fit much better in my truck.
Best add on I ever put on my diesel.

I think Mel said he lost 1-2 lbs of boost, but saw a significant enough drop in EGT's that he was able to turn his pump up even more and gain all that power back. Remember, it's not a measure of how much boost you're actually putting into the engine, it's a measure of how dense that air is, and how cold it is. Colder air is more dense, and will give you more power at a lower boost rating than hotter air that is less dense at a higher boost rating.

I put off adding my intercooler (6.0) for several years because I was worried that my non gated turbo would have more lag.
The boost gauge does show a little more lag than before, but if you didnt look at the boost gauge you would swear it improved turbo spool time.

Dont worry about the numbers, it will add power to your truck.
Pulling a load, in OD and 2100 or so I run 5-6psi and 800-900deg. Wot with same load, speed and rpm, I get 10psi and 1100 deg.

Its finally starting to sink in, its not about the numbers but it is about the density and temps. I have been preaching this for years. THANK YOU for this post.

Guys wanting a good intercooler for our trucks. Please contact Mel at conestoga diesel. He installed an ebay intercooler thats working great for him on the moose truck. I don't recall the name of the ebay seller but I know the location is about 10 miles from my home. If I can help anyone out I will go and ask some questions. I just sold my spare hypermax intercooler to a member in az. Took forever to make it shippable without it getting damaged because I was so ship with what the wifey gave me. I would start working on the packageing and just run out of energy fast. Then it would take hours of rest just to get up and move around. I'm about 99% back to normal now.. Still coughing from a tickle deep in my chest.. Hate that too...
