I paid $1300 for the ATS kit when they were still selling them. imho, it's well worth it from the standpoint they did ALL the engineering to make it work with minimal cutting into the truck. You certainly can get an IC for $150 and a piping setup for less than $300. You will have to figure how to make it all work though. what's your time worth and how do you feel about being a lab rat?

Some people have taken PSD intercoolers and used them with IDI's. I'm going to be doing this myself pretty soon...I have an intercooler off an '05 6.0hNo that I plan to put on my truck. I'm not 100% sure what all this job will entail; will have a better idea when I'm actually doing it...but, at the very least, you'll need to figure out a way to mount it to the core support, and you'll need to fabricate piping. FWIW I've heard that one of the two factory 6.0l pipes will work and the other will not, but since I haven't actually done it, I can't say for sure...

I paid about $200 for my intercooler...CERTAINLY cheaper than the Hypermax kit!!

My intent is to put it immediately in front of the radiator, and relocate the a/c condenser in front of the intercooler. That's basically the same way it's set up on the PSD trucks, and I'm also on a mission to get my a/c as cold as possible LOL but, we'll see how realistic things are when I actually start turning wrenches. Hopefully it'll be pretty soon, but we'll see what actually happens...

And, no, the 6.0l intercooler is not the only one that will fit...the 7.3l intercooler will fit also, and IIRC some people have said that the 7.3l IC will actually fit better than the 6.0l one. Look for 6 Nebraska IDI's brown truck build thread, also...he put an intercooler out of a Dodge Cummins on his truck, but in his case it was a necessity since he has the early extra-wide radiator.

I actually bought my IC off another OB member (thank you again ;Sweet) who ended up not needing it. I got the IC and both factory 6.0l pipes; again, I'm hoping I'll be able to use one of them and figure out what to do for the other one...

BTW, what year's your truck? FWIW I have serious doubts about getting a full-size intercooler and a/c condenser to fit in front of the radiator on an '80-'86 truck without either removing the grille or shaving the grille so much that it's paper-thin LOL There's more space to play with on an '87-'91 brick-nose, and there's certainly plenty of space on the OBS trucks...

Holy Mary, that's quite a bit of cooling ;Sweet I presume the bumper was damaged/getting repaired or replaced...did any of the exchangers get damaged in the hit? If so, I feel bad for whoever has to pay that bill  seems like those exchangers hang quite low...I imagine there's a fair amount of potential for damage on the lower parts. Certainly explains the need for bumper cut-outs :D

I believe a 200 degree drop for the inlet temp is about what to expect from an intercooler installation. The spinning turbo heats up the inlet air charge lots. At 13 lbs and higher its upwards of 300 degrees. I should probably do some tests when I install one of my hypermax intercoolers. Just a little welding on the aluminum inlet and outlets to the intercooler will tell.. Usually called *** & TAT....:sly The large combustion turbines I worked on for 10 years had an outlet temp (TAT) of 1659 degrees... There was 18 stages of compressor blades before the 5 stages of the power section. The overall length of the turbine grew 6 inches in length.... That was shocking to watch....

actually the hit was hood/fender/driver's headlight. A garbage packer backed into him:eek: he was lucky that was the only damage.
here's the comparo's between the two.....
