I am going to take out my IP pump and was told by a friend that i will not have to mess with any timing as long as i dont remove the timing gear cover and have the people rebuilding my pump time it to international spec, has any one done this or have further information on the steps to doing it this way.

your friend is dead wrong.

except for the part of " DO NOT REMOVE THE TIMING GEAR OR HOUSING".

if you remove the housing, you will be removing the entire front cover to align marks.

now marking your IP to the gear housing will get you close, if they rebuild the same pump.

i have seen new IP's installed and the internal timing has varied from -9 to 15 degrees.(the retarded mechanic factor included)

refer to http://www.oilburners.net/forums/sh...ith-timing-my-bull-moose&highlight=bull+moose
for the -9 degree method.

this is not avoidable.

while the IP rebuilder will get you in the ball park, it will still need to be timed.

FYI, Mel at CDI has a 5 digit ($00,000.00) machine to calibrate these pumps, and he still requires you to time the IP after.

the only timing method we have on our trucks is IP timing, cam timing is set by the alignment of the gears.
the only time this is messed with, is when youre getting a performance cam.
and if youre doing that, you know these engines like the back of your hand.

In the first place, why are you getting the IP rebuilt?

There are reputable rebuilders and some that are not so. Since your in Penn., Conestoga diesel should be your choice. You will get a quality rebuild there. It would do you well to reveal who the rebuilder is going to be. Check the Hall of Shame on here.

If you have the OEM injectors, after a rebuild you may not get the results your expecting. As the IP wears, it should be retimed, at least after a 100K miles. Then see the results after doing that.

Any IP has to be timed after a rebuild, the original timing marks are NOT reliable. Each and every IP is timed at the OEM during it's hot test and marked at that time, it's just a relative mark in case it would be removed at that time for any reason or a starting point.

The place i am getting it rebuilt is called Wimer fuel injection and that is in Sandy lake PA, it is only 20 miles or so from where i live so it seemed like a good choice. It has also been difficult finding some one to re-time and work on this engine that is not 300 miles away, thats why im left looking to do it my self. The pump started leaking fuel some time after i did the injectors and now starts really hard and smokes, no power and bad gas millage.

Your pump rebuilder is a relatively unknown. That being said, I'd tend to go with Conestoga Diesel. You can't get any better.

How to remove the IP? There is an excellent article in the Tech Article section of this forum. It was written by none other than Mel (Agnem here on OB), owner and operator of Conestoga Diesel. You would be well-advised to read the pertinent sections. It is located HERE. When I pulled my IP I actually printed out the sections I needed and kept them on hand for the job.

Changing the injectors did not make the IP start to leak.

The hard start, smoking and bad mileage came from the injectors.

Where the injectors NEW or a Rebuilt?

New injectors usually (pop/inject fuel) at 1450 PSI (lowest acceptable) to 1850 PSI (normal setting),or up too 2000 PSI. All of the above, can be from a miss timed IP, any time injectors are replaced, the IP HAS to be retimed. The IP and injectors wear at the same time, so if one or the other is changed, they are not compatible.

There are lots of sellers of so called rebuilt injectors, the only way of telling if there quality injectors, is to pop test them yourself or have it done.

Get IP from them too....then you know what you have.

@icanfixall has a timing meter rental program soaybe PM him amd set something up.

Bottom line if yer puking fuel from IP amd need new one go to a known reputable builder and do time yer truck.

Remember though that when YOU are doing the timing you are timing the whole system. This includes injectors (well one of them anyway) and any other uniqueness of your engine. The IP timing done at a shop is to make sure that it is close enough that you can time it on the engine without using a file.

Please read the Hall of Shame forum to find out who not to buy anything from. As already posted, nobody here has heard of this injection pump repair shop. I'm with everyone here and suggest you have what we all know is a well respected shop build you pump. you already purchased injectors from Conestoga and I suspect you went shopping for a less expensive pump. No worries bout shopping we all do it but.. Its double the time & cost when you find they cheated you. I don't know how far you are from Mel in Pa. but he can and will time your engine. Mel and probably timed in excess of 2000 idi engines over the years at the rallies we attend. I had him time my engine with his new Moose pump he installed because he offered it to me. This forum is here to improve everyone's ability to improve the knowledge about these trucks and engines.

You don't say exactly where your at, check the Stickys for someone that might near you for timing.

I am located near Erie PA and threw talking with people and searching the web i have only located one shop with a know reputation and that Wimers injection, it would be great to take my truck to Conestoga but i feel the old thing would not make the drive.

I'm done with you, no more suggestions. Your the one that asked for help. If it's too much of a problem to take five minutes to look at the sticky. Good luck.
