Incredibly LOUD SMF conversion

I've been around a lot of these truck with single mass flywheel conversions so this is not a newby talking about gear rollover that is new since the conversion. I used to have fleet of F350's and F450's with them, and more recently 7.3 PSD'S with SMF's. So I have an idea what is normal.

Because of a time crunch, I broke 2 of my usual rules, one change only one thing at a time, and two research parts before buying.
I finished the install of a new Junior Moose and a set of BB injectors. Truck running great, idle smooth, boost, smoke etc seems fine. Next day take if for the usual 30 mile loop to the other ranch and going up a long grade that it will usually pull in 5th gear, it was pulling good enough it would blow right through the clutch!
Not surprising on 150,000 mile stock clutch. I knew it was getting close since the flywheel was getting a little noisy and had quite bit of rotational play. Surely getting ready to spit out a spring one day.

With cattle to go to market in a few weeks and an airplane waiting for me in a couple of days I scrambled up a LUK 07131 clutch kit and installed. I had a nice used surfaced ready to go conversion flywheel, don't know brand....Clutch works nice, drives and shifts nice, no noticeable vibration.
The problem is it is EXTREMELY loud. Just normal driving it is as loud as one would normally be if you were really lugging it at idle just before the point you killed the engine. And if you do lug it at idle, it makes you think something is going to blow! Never heard one this loud.

My supplier said bring it back no problem (35 years buying there 2 generations). But I hesitate to tear it out again for nothing.
Here is what I plan to check:
Check for metal contact (bellhousing to trans tunnel or similar) I don't think so, doesn't sound like that.
Check for flywheel runout and wobble. Normally I would have dial indicated this during assembly, see what happens when you break your own rules.....
Compression test on engine to be sure uneven cylinders aren't the problem.
Close look at the possibility of a poor injector or other engine problem.
Recheck timing. I set with a Snap On ST257. Renting Gary's this time.
On the timing, I had my Son back it down to 5 degrees (the old line up marks) for an experiment, performance is worse, clutch noise is lessened a little.
PLEASE share anything you might have had go wrong in this area. I literally need to drop out of the sky and fix this in a few days.........while getting the wife through a surgery.

Reklund's post pretty well covers it. The only thing that concerns me is that I purchased a LUK kit. His problem was fixed by installing a LUK. Now given the amount of reboxing, private labeling, etc that goes on who knows what I got. Worst part is I was in a rush so I didn't really study the spring design. Parts house I bought it from has no problem taking it back, but what do I get? Better buy it from a specialist like South Bend so there is no question.

Just have your part house check the part numbers. My first clutch was a Sachs labelled "HD" in the part number indicating "heavy duty". In talking with a product engineer at Sachs, they offer a standard duty clutch which has the EXACT same spring configuration as the LUK that I installed. Perhaps you just got the LUK version of HD? I also had a out of balance flywheel on the first go-round, you might check that too.

Dumb question, but is your turbo down pipe rubbing on the transmission or somewhere else? Mine was just barely riding on the bellhousing of the transmission after my ZF swap...it made the same growling gear noise you describe all the time, just like when you lug the engine in low gears. I thought for sure it was either rollover or a junk transmission...ended up just needing to re-adjust my downpipe for proper clearance. No more problem.
