Called up CHI and they do have a set of rebuild heads in stock. They will accept a pair of the cracked ones as cores. $1,150 total, including shipping the cores back.

That kind of sucks, but it's probably not too bad of a price these days. The shipping alone is probably quite a bit.

I still question how bad they are. Why would a shop accept cracked heads as a good core, unless its just the pre cups.

I'm swinging by the local machine shop tomorrow to pick up one set of the cracked heads. I'll see if he can point out where they are cracked and I'll take some pictures.

He also wants me to bring him the main caps and bolts so he can torque those to spec before boring the block.

The rebuild heads should be here Thursday. So hopefully I can finally start putting this thing back together again soon!

Crack is clear on the first head, but I don't really see it on the 2nd one, but I guess they did when magnafluxing it?

The one with the crack between the valves is unfortunate, but the other one... Send it out as a core I can't see anything either.

I can see it. The lines aren't centered. It's just to the left of the line on the right side of the "U" shape.

Precups have minor cracking, but nowhere near extending out to the fire ring:

Did I mention they also come with a 1 year warranty? All in all I think a very fair deal and they got from Texas to Virginia in 4 days from when I ordered them Monday. They went regular UPS ground. Poor UPS lady was struggling getting them off her truck, so I gave her a hand.

I put the core heads back in the boxes, attached the included return labels, and dropped then off at the UPS Store. Done.

Wow I'm amazed that they delivered those on a normal UPS truck. And same thing that you could just walk in and return the old ones, I wouldn't have guessed that at all. Must be right at the upper limit. To send an average delivery driver out to wrestle 100lb cast iron is a little much...

They sure look nice! Hopefully they aren't shaved at all and have the right valve clearance. Amazing shipping speed, too.
