5 tons with the multifuel with 11.00s can get about 9/11 depending. with the 250 cummins 4 - 6. they arent that great. the cummins is more reliable and cheaper to work on but lacks the fuel. The multifuel is very load. even the cummins is pretty bad and have to wear hearing protection

the 5 ton dump is an 817. the air noise ur hearing is the sprag. the air shsh thing into reverse is the sprag locking in. then you have to go to neutral and then into 1st and the sprag will lock into forward. when the rear tires slip the front will lock. its kinda a crappy design.

I will add that with 11.00-20 tires (43") the 5 tons top out at 48-52mph. With 14.00s(49) you can get up to 60. With 16.00s you can get up to 75 but you cannot get into mud with 16.00s on a 5 ton or your screwed.

simp, are you saying a 392 is bigger? its a SV motor, weighs around 800-850ish and is just a little bit smaller than a 6.9. the scouts came with a 345, and they're the same thing as a 392. the 6.9 in my scout fills the engine bay a bit more than a 345.

f250, a 6.9/7.3 is a perfect swap for them, they have a ton more room than an scout and the best part is it's pretty straight forward, if you use a 2wd trans you just need a jack shaft. check out the binderplanet.com there's a few people that put them in IH pickups. if yoy have any questions just ask, i have a few D series pickups too. ;Sweet

Hey 6.9 thanks for the info and links. Im new to this site so I appreciate the help. So what does your scout get for mpg with that 6.9 in it?

If I'm not pounding it in the woods, and I'm just driving around town or the highway it'll average 20 mpg.....on 37s with a t19 and 4.10 gears.

Just some pics of the engine bay. Trying to get working on getting the engine installed this week if I have motivation. Also posted some pictures of the clutch pack and flywheel that came out of the original engine/trans combo for the spicer 6454 tranny.

Pics of the spicer 6454 5spd direct drive transmission. Yeah it is pretty heavy. Wish I could find a way to get a output yoke like it has for a C6 or a better built automatic.

If you want a REAL stout automatic, you can always scrounge up an Allison commercial box out of a school bus or some such critter. They shift a bit on the *brisk* side when unloaded, but they can handle hauling insane loads without complaining and you'd get that nice big output flange to rig up some real stout driveshafts to ;Sweet

Did you happen to get any pictures of the flywheel when it was still mounted up inside that SAE setup ? or do you at least have a few pics of the flywheel ? Would like to see how it was all laid out in there.

I should have a repair manual for that spicer box and its assorted related parts if you need a copy

Here are some pics with the flywheel. The clutch pack sticks out about 3 inches from the SAE plate.

Yes you can. I would go and view the truck and the GL employees will let you start it and look it over and do a basic check. You can check on steelsoldiers.com and find some members in the area around where your looking at buying one and see if someone there will go inspect it. As they will know ALOT of what to look for, as well as some of the guys on there are GL employees so it helps. If you arent going very far I would drive it if they are in good shape. Or trailer it. M35s dont weigh to much. 13-18k depending on models. Also other SS members in your area might be willings to towbar the truck to your place for a slight bit.

If you trailer an M35 though, make sure to face it backwards on the trailer :)

BTW an END OF USE certificate (EUC) is required for all vehicles anymore. That can take anywhere from 48 hours after you submit it to 6 weeks to clear depending on your background. Just keep that in mind.

Depends on your state. its a gray area. If your state allows you to set your own GVW then yeah you can put it at 26k and be fine. I would get it up and going and get a class A or B cdl and air brakes with it and be done with it.

M931s are nice but they WILL go for 4k+ due to the scrapper. and that is **** poor shape. Cheaper to go with a M818 if you can find one and just add a bed to it. What is your price range and I will see what I can find
