I am located in south Florida and I am in the market to buy a 6.9 IDI. Does anyone know of any on the market or any sonar trucks?

Thank you!

There’s a free block on marketplace in northern Oregon no heads just a block unknown conditions. What are you looking for? Reman ? Known good runner? A custom build thing like Justin at R and D?

Years ago I was down in Florida on vacation and needed parts to fix a breakdown. That's when I found out many of the idi trucks were caught up in the Obama cash for clunkers. Most were sent to the crusher. They were in the back 40 but they could not sell parts off of them once they were turned in.

I haven’t heard of any good remanufactured engines but I’d be open to one as well as a known good running engine

Obviously a 6.9 is good, but consider a 7.3. it's more gooder. They are the same engine except the 7.3 has a little more displacement and a little more umph. I'm in NW Florida..... the 850 even!!!

I'll keep my eyes open locally, but south Florida is a long way for Crestview....

I understand. I had a block cavitate on me too before I knew what it was and before I was part of this forum. BUT!!! now I know and knowing is half the battle, just like in G.I.Joe. So, since you know too, just make sure you put a coolant filter on it with the coolant treatment stuff and there's nothing to worry about. Don't cheat yourself out of 12 horse power by going 6.9, these engines don't have much power in the first place and you need/want all you can get.

What is the difference between a liner and a sleeve? Or are they the same thing?
I'm no expert on this but I believe that a sleeve is installed by a machine shop and is intended to be relatively permanent. They are used on lighter duty engines. A liner is used in heavy duty engines and can be removed by a mechanic without the block being bored. That is how you get the term "doing an in frame overhaul" with heavy duty engines. The engines can still be in the frame of the truck and you can install new liners and pistons. Hopefully someone with more heavy duty experience than I have can clarify this farther.

IDIBRONCO, you are pretty close. Liner typically refers to the cylinder liner that is used on "wet" liner engines. They have O-ring grooves and seal against the block using O-rings and brass shims. Liner height or protrusion is critical, as the clamp load from the cylinder head holds the liner in place. During an overhaul, these liners are removed and replaced, the engine is never bored to a larger piston size. Often the sealing surfaces of the block will still need to be re-machined to clean it up. There are over sized shims available just for this reason. See Image of a wet liner below. Most large displacement diesels are wet liner engines. The smallest wet liner engines that I am aware of is International's 400 engine family, (DT466 and it's variants) and the 53 Series Detroits.

A dry liner, or sleeve, is used on all parent bore blocks to repair a cylinder that has been damaged beyond what can be removed by a standard overbore. In this situation, the bore is machined out far enough to accept the sleeve. The sleeve is than pressed into the bore and then machined to final bore size and surface finish. Nearly all light duty engines (including our IDI's) are parent bore blocks.

That said, alot of machinists will interchange the use of liner and sleeve, so don't get hung up on the nomenclature. Typically most machine shops will charge $80 to $125 per hole to sleeve a block.
