Here's a random question, what weighs more the auto or manual. I 'd think auto?

Oh, yeah, gdhillon, the automatics will outweigh the manual choices, for sure. I understand that the E4OD is heaviest of all, at around 300 lbs with converter. Sure felt like it, as I wrestled it around.

As I saw when mine was partially pulled apart, the E4OD is darn near solid steel and stainless, all the way through.... just in a million parts. Not much airspace in between! LOL

This pic is with just the OD clutch out... 3 more clutch packs (and other parts) to go. My problem may well be the forward planetary, which is at the very bottom of this pile.:frustrate

By comparison, a manual is some gears, shafts, bearings, levers and synchros.... a fraction of this load of metal. A lot more airspace in its housing, too.

Received very high recommendation from my tire-and-front-end guy, to a local and professional automatic-only trans shop. Risking $400 for a teardown and diagnosis of the dead E4OD. Would be applied to rebuild of my unit, if I proceed that direction. All units rebuilt to order.

ZF swap (see other thread) extremely impractical at this time. Clutch improvisation very involved.

Really need OD and lockup, due to much freeway driving. So, I may well be staying with what I know........

Trans now at trans specialist. Teardown and inspection shows wear, but nothing within case indicates failure. I now have a serviceable E4OD, fully dismantled.

Might as well cut the converter, but they blindsided me with: "have you checked your differential?"

Words fail me. Nearly catatonic.

Report on converter: internal parts making contact, sending aluminum into fluid.

Further details on trans: Aluminum planetary (!!), lugs on case "beaten back" and sloppy, lip seals hard and flattened, solenoid block needs replacement due to metal contamination. Basically, it didn't die now, but, trouble was coming.

About to drop the cover on the diff, and see what falls out.....  :frustrate

Be sure the planets are upgraded to steel carriers. They are not that expensive.

My understanding is that all appropriate updates will be done, trackspeeder. I will ask that to be written into the work order.

Meanwhile, no shrapnel inside my Dana 60. :dunno

A bit ahead of schedule, trackspeeder. LOL :sly

Meanwhile, gave go-ahead for rebuild. Converter is one level (?) above stock: Billet, furnace-brazed, heavier bearings, stock stall-speed.

no better time to have the transgo tugger shift kit installed.make her shift like she's supposed to complete with pump mods.

Oh, heck, FORDF250HDXLT.... totally spaced that there'd be a shift kit available.:hail

Trans service mgr is getting a little unnerved at all the info I hit him with (and I thank all you guys for that!). LOL LOL LOL Might be too late for this, but I'll hit him with this Monday morning. Hopefully, they haven't started assembly yet. Since I won't be able to pick this up until mid-February anyway, a slight delay's no problem for me.

FYI: The C6 in my ill-fated F250 worked great... the only system in it that did! The last automatic I've ever had before that was a THM-200 in like 1979. Buddy & I pulled that out and swapped in a stick. LOL :D So, this E4OD has been a learning experience, for sure.... :sly

Updating the center support can be done on any pre 95 units. Easy change out the hub, use the updated bearing and center shaft. This can be bought as a kit to make it real easy.

While playing with the center support, I would add a stabilizer ring. This will stop those pesky feed bolt issues.

Tugger is a must. Actually any kit is a must. A shift kit will help keep the unit alive. Specially if you tow or haul a lot weight.

Last but not least a bigger tranny cooler. Heat is the enemy.
