Biggest load with IDI

Back when my grandfather owned my truck, and the truck was stock, we grossed about 18K with about 3 or 4 large Snap on box's filled to the brim with tools. We loaded them into a trailer with a 1.5 ton eletric winch mounted on a frame about 15' high. Each box strained that winch big time.

As far as how did it handle it, it did fine. My grandfather is a slow driver as it is so its not like I could tell a difference. I know on one 25mile and hour corner going up a steep hill he had to drop down to 2nd. Thats about it.

I've personally only hauled about 6K with it. It did fine, but hills required 3rd gear to maintain a solid 55-60mph.

I grossed about 17,000 between the F250, trailer and the truck on the trailer.......Handled it fine...I haven't grossed over 15k with my dually yet...."Yet" being the term.

I have never yet put mine to any real test yet, so I can't really speak as to just how heavy one of these trucks can haul.


Several times per week, with the old 6.9-IDI engine, was a 28 X 8 goose-neck trailer with fifteen smallish cows averaging 1750-1800 pounds apiece; you can do the math.

Harder to pull, but probably not hardly so heavy, was the old 36-foot tri-axle flat-bed with full-length over-the-neck deck, regularly loaded with 360 square-bales of wire-tie alfalfa hay.

I have often had more and bigger behind it since the Cummins.

Although the old IDI stood right up there and did the job, making my living, it now pulls a heavy-loaded trailer with more authority that it used to feel with no load at all.

My buddy I-H freak(stewart) pulled a 30,000 pound fire truck just a couple weeks ago with his truck, second gear and revlimiter for around 2 miles it was pretty interesting seeing the hole road clouded out in smoke by a little white truck pulling a big red firetruck down the road

Seems to be that the IDI will handle a pretty heavy load fairly well, once up to speed, and slowing down on hills. Some of these reports sound downright scary. I'd probably be most nervous about the stock brakes.

I have 21,428 according to the scale at luck stone and is did fine slow to get to speed but fine after that 94 350 4.10 5 speed banks turbo
also pulled 97 PSD CC long bed 350 which I love doing with my old IDI

Not much to be honest...biggest amount of anything I've done yet was this past June when I moved, and had to put my car on a u-haul trailer...so I had the roughly 2K lb U-haul trailer plus my 3500 lb car, and some junk in the bed. So I was towing about 5500 lbs and hauling a couple hundred more in the bed. Truck felt slow and I had to watch the pyrometer, but it pulled it just fine.

The most I've weighed my truck at was 15K...about 7.5K for the truck (including the tongue weight; my truck's about 7K empty) and another 7.5K for the trailer. The truck certainly knew the weight was there...if I hadn't previously decided to switch to hydroboost and add an intercooler, that haul would have convinced me for sure!! BTW this was with a 2 5/16" receiver hitch without weight distribution although she handled the load just fine from a suspension/sway standpoint. The engine labored with the load, particularly going uphill, and even with trailer brakes, I had to be careful about slowing down and stopping...but all went well otherwise!

I'm 99% sure that I've hauled heavier, but that's the heaviest load I've actually weighed...

Not a really big load, Ford Ranger on a 2 ton trailer that I hauled for BigRigTech.

1976 Camper....loaded with all the campsite accessories and the concrete and wooden blocking that I hauled for my aunt and uncle...THAT WAS HEAVY!!!

Both Bronco's I hauled for BigRigTech. Not SUPER heavy, but not exactly empty shells either.

Ford F150, 6 cylinder auto(I think) 4x4 I hauled for BigRigTech.....It don't look like much, but the bed was loaded to the max with tires...that added to the strain on my pickup .

I never really had a problem hauling anything with the truck. The camper was teh worst of them all. It was summer, hotter than the devils @$$hole after eating a donair and I had to drag it across hilly country. The only time it got hot was coming up the big hill on the 101 between Windsor and Mount Uniacke, but I wouldn't say it got any hotter than 215 - 220*F. With the 3.55's it was a little sluggish, but I wouldn't say it was any worse than what most modern gasser trucks would do towing the same.

lol even if i would of had a camera and posted a video you would be able to see anything behind me . but ya i will try to get you a picture of fire truck when i get batteries for my camera. it was very interesting it never got below 25 pulling it which i think is pretty good with no turbo. we didnt pull it with a trailer that was a pull with a old log chain. i cant believe it did it, i bet my egt's were through the roof.
