Diesel oil has so much detergent compared to gassers. Ive never had sludge build up in a diesel engine

So like a quart or two quarts to add? My 6.9 burns a ton of oil so it probably wouldn't matter what I add, it'll just eat it anyway

This happens to ALL Engines when you use Merry Go Round Oil and Filters

you can have a clean engine inside but the wear you have to measure.
If you are using oil it is for many reasons but the most popular is

And that you wont see until you pull the engine apart.

Just adding non Generic Synthetic lubricants and Synthetic filters will
eliminate the wear and varnish that wears down your cylinders in short order.

Piston in the picture is a 302 FORD Mustang COBRA engine I bought as a wreck
engine was good at 140,000 miles had oil changes every 2500 miles had all the
invoices in the glove box, I pulled the engine apart to view the condition.
that is what I found.

Using better air/oil filtration alone will extend the life of any engine and lubricant
at least a few times over.

I have over 47,000 miles on one oil change with a Oil Analysis report that was still good
for continued use. Took me 5 years to travel 47,000 miles no oil change, been there done that!

I am doing it again but cant go past 20,000 now that I make my own fuel, oil analysis flags
me for a change.

Filtration is key in longer drain intervals and less engine wear.

30 micron particles you cannot see but cause a bunch of wear because they are never captured, this is why you HAVE TO CHANGE OIL! Buy a better oil filter that catches particles down to 5 microns and BINGO! you are allowed to drive your truck longer!

Yea I'm a giant *****!
Thank me, thank me very much!

ATF in your engine oil? just plain boring and not very helpful considering the reason you think you must do this...

these engines can make all kinds of neat noises, especially if you listen to close.
I would bet your noise is caused by an injector. Didnt you have an intermittent rough idle not too long ago?

Yes Sir, good memory...some thought the IP-advance piston was sticking (remember?)
However, it appears the intermittent rough idle or murmur subsided, and I can't say the ****** noise and the at times slight idle-murmur happened at the same time. Very confusing indeed but what I did discover when it had that slight murmur (while at a red light) I slip the trans into "N" and the idle was butter smooth! Drop it back into "D" and the slight miss/murmur was there again > but like the ****** noise, it too would also come and go, and very confusing so much > I even check flywheel bolts, then though it was a loose fan belt or pulley > nope.

Trying to ascertain the situation further and thinking what I've done differently...well...for several thousand miles I stopped using my regular Mobil Delvac 1300 15/40 and was using Walmart Supertec 15/40 but as always I regularly change the oil 3-5000 miles and as I've always done since new 1988.

Well, last oil change I used (bought on clearance) Valvoline 15/40 Diesel Oil and maybe, just maybe that's why the ****** comes 'less' frequent???
I've also stopped using 1-oz of TCW3 per gallon of diesel, instead I went back to Power Service at 1-oz to 3-gal of diesel fuel.

So, beats me, sometimes I think it's a lifter, but usually a lazy lifter will act-up when the oil is hot and thin, this ****** can be at first start-up and last for several days. Did I mention it's been 3 degrees here, so the oil isn't being over heated.

Then, at times I think it's a bad injector or what's mysteriously called 'fuel knock' but I know what the inside of a injector looks like...and I'm not understanding why it would/could act up? And, if an injector was acting-up...wouldn't that cause a miss???

Anyhow, and as I clearly remember, even with some 190,000 miles on my 1988 OE IP and Injectors, the engine was ALWAYS quiet, never skipped a beat and it got better fuel mileage.

I have had injectors cause noises with out rough running and run bad with no noise.

I also had an old 6.9 that had a funny noise that came and went (with a slightly rough idle though) that turned out to be a pump problem.

At 200k I figured I was doing my truck a favor with a new set of injectors, it has never ran and sounded as good as it did with those "worn out" injectors.
And I remember this being mentioned before, but atleast with my trucks, it they dont get worked every so often they start sounding kinda crappy.

So, with new vs old, you too are experiencing the same thing...ain't that something?

I find after I have "worked" my engine like towing it sounds better and runs better. I'm guessing I burn off the crap buildup on the cylinders and rings when it works hard. Our engines need to be heated up to keep the cylinders and rings from building up the varnish from the oil. Not saying we heat up the engine till its nearly overtemp but just run it like a truck earning a living. Just town driving in stop and go traffic wont keep our engines running well for long. Make them work to get the most out of them.

Its amazing how much smoke my truck will produce when I hop on the freeway after putting around town empty. I hardly burn any oil and it only does it in this situation. Its not a smoke screen just noticeable

So, still waiting on a answer on how much to add and do we just let the engine idle or do we drive it a while prior to changing the oil

ATF detergency is very low compared to engine oil, especially diesel rated engine oil (which is very high in detergency). All you are doing by adding ATF to the crankcase is adding stuff that isn't designed to be in there.. mainly friction modifiers designed for fiber clutches... diluting the viscosity (adding SAE 10-20 grade base oil into a 30 or 40 grade base oil). ATFs sometimes contain esters that can do some cleaning but those esters were not designed to be in the crankcase environment. Waste of time and money. Same goes for ATF in the fuel. How can ATF clean better than diesel fuel (I use it as a cleaning solvent, for Pete's sake). Also, ATF isn't designed to be combusted so it leaves deposits (the additives) when it does. 2 stroke oil is much better in that regard.

If you need to clean things, add something designed to do that. MMO is one such solvent, Creen or Auto-RX are others. Best to just let the engine oil do it naturally over time. Generally, engines don't need any cleaning beyond what they get from the motor oil already. If you are getting sludge or soot agglomeration, either the engine has been neglected in the past, is being neglected now, has the wrong oil in it or it's not getting run up to temp enough ,or long enough, or the t-stat isn't working properly (overcooling).

If you want something to clean up your engine internals in a safe manner just use Auto-Rx instead of guessing on the amount/time for ATF. I have used it and also talked to a nimber of people who have had great success with it. It isn't an instant thing though. It slowly cleans it over a 3000 mile interval.

Been getting a few days of the engine being as quiet as a church mouse and ultra-smooth idling to where I can't tell the engine is turning...just like old times.
Ughhh, but I know, and for (whatever reason) the rattle, rap-rap-****** will be back again.

Fuel related or oil related...that...is the question????????????

It has to be fuel related. Could be either pump or injecter related. Might want to think about a Baby Moose pump. Then you will know you have a great pump. No more of that ..."Were sorry but please try another of our pumps crap"... That was some sad business there.. I will never buy from the florida panhandle from now on...:angel:
