Neighbor told me he had some AMSoil ATF sitting on the shelf that he has nothing to use it in anymore. I thought what the heck. Told him I'd take it figuring if nothing else I'll put it in the tank for lube or run it in my subaru (it's ild enough it calls for dex/merc).

It's ancient but it's full syn dexron 3 / mercon

What typ4 said.. Sounds like a nice short project for today, drain and refill with the Amsoil. Amsoil is all I use, for oil and their ATF. I can't say enough good things about their products. Please don't waste it as fuel.;Really

I put amsoil in my ZF. I want to say it quieted it down and shifts nice. I was trying to quiet down a gear roll over noise. I didn't over fill it though as many say.

Definitely keep it for the ZF. That is some spend stuff!

Generally, you would first check what type of fluid is specified for the ZF, or any trans. If it's ATF, you don't want to use a heavier oil like an 80W90, and vice versa.

Then you check farther because the friction modifiers (FM) vary considerably in ATF types and sometimes they are incompatible with the syncros is some manuals (causing gear grinding because if there are too many FM, the oil gets too slippery for the syncros to work well).

My book lists the Ford Mercon spec oil for the ZF-5, which is an ATF, and I see that listed on the bottle so you are officially good to go!

..... It even says zf on the bottle.... I'd run it and smile at saving $50-$70 and dump a quart of the old stuff in when you fill up. You could put a paper towel on a funnel and "strain" it that way if that makes you feel better

It does say ZF on the bottle. Hadn't caught that until now. ;Sweet

Although it is referring to ZF automatics, not necessarily manuals. The ZF 4HP22 automatic, with which I became intimately familiar back in my Range Rover days, called for Dex III which is likely why this oil is compatible. In any case, Ford spec'ed Mercon for it (which was a Group III base oil IIRC, unusual back then). The Mercon spec was a big quality jump over Dex III.
