I am trying to understand how these pumps work to find out how far they go before they quit working . Along with what is the early symptoms of possible failing pump .When the Eng is running Does the pressure increase as you drive and if they develop small drip drip of diesel in the Vp can you monitor that on Idell condition or the truck must be under a load for the leak to develop. I am trying to monitor my pump

Depending on where the leak is you can hopefully run a long time but. That sure kills the fuel mileage **** that. Most leaks are the inlet seal on the line from the filter or the advance plunger on the drivers side of the pump. Might be a shaft seal leak and if so that leak will be directly under the body flange near the front of the pump. Its its leaking there you need a new pump. They will not slow down but will get worse.
i cleaned the VP as much as i can under the IP and slipped a clean paper towel to catch any sign of moist. I dont see any wet spots on the pump body or by going over it with my finger . The only thing i was able to spot is one of the 5/16 connector threads coming out of the pump was somewhat damp but not dripping
