1 piece fuel filter, say napa #3617?

Just discovered you can get a spin on fuel filter where you don't have to use the bottom bowl/seperator, So my questions are ?
Are they easier to replace, Do they filter as good (micron rating 12 I think)
And why are they cheaper, almost 1/2 the cost
Can anyone give me any reasons why or why not ?

Been running that style for 2 years now. I think they are just as good. Easier to deal w/ than the other style. Cheaper

Hastings also makes the same type of fuel filter. I have been running those on my trucks, and I am very pleased. Both NAPA and Hastings fuel filters come with and without the option of having the water in fuel sensor.

Yes they are cheaper and maybe easier to install, I think the filter is rated for 2 or 5 microns (I allways forget wich one) not 12 or you meant 1-2. Yes they are cheaper, $16 a piece on filter one.

The 1 drawback to the 1 piece filters is availability. You can get the stock Ford filters anywhere. I would suggest throwing the old filter bowl in a baggie and keeping in under the seat "just in case". There have been instances of people being stranded because they had a 1 piece filter clog and no replacements available locally.

So a one piece filter does not use the filter bowl ?
That would be great. Last year I had to pay a tow truck to get home when my filter clogged. I had a spare and a wrench to get it off, just could not get the bowl off the old filter. I assume with this set-up the the warning lights don't work ?

If you get the one with the sensor connectors, then yes everything still works.

That is the same one I use, and I allways keep a spare for availability.

Yes, 7.3 only. I'm going to pull the filter off of my 6.9 and see if the pipe for a 7.3IDI can be used with the 6.9 filter header.

Or if someone has one lying around and can check. Usually those fittings will have a hex inside to install and remove with a large allen key.

Cool, I have the 7.3 filter head on mine, so after I use this last "bottomless" filter, I will go to these.

Ok Think I'm gonna go with this one piece filter due to all the good peoples advice here on this forum, so whats the average milage / time to change the filter? usually get fuel at high volume stations.
Sorry if these are redundent / ignorant questions but I'm fairly new to deisel & diesel maint.

you don't much to worry about in kali. feul quality is gov't checked. Most tanks around here are less than three years old so there hasn't been much of a chance for curd to build up either. Once a year is good enough, if you do notice a huge performance drop-off after a fill up, change the filter out just to be safe. I always keep four spares in my trucks. Can't hurt.

OK this is confusing. Are you saying there are 2 different 33617 filters? I cannot get my factory bowl to stop leaking, it would be nice to do away with it. But I definately need the water light to work. I can't really tell what that hole is in the pic, is that a water sensor?

I have my original bowl on the bench filled with brakleen and I see no leaks. So I'm pretty sure the o-ring surface is pitted enough that it just won't seal.

Just about any direction leaving my house is a decent hill with a stop at the top. A nice cloud of smoke comes rolling out from under the hood and it drives me crazy.
