A tip: using old GM in line fuel filter on IDIs

Working on replacing the 31 year old awful hydraulic hose type fuel lines on my 94 GMC with standard 3/8 and 5/16 hose, I had to do a lot of research for fittings. GM could have used regular fuel hose but NoOoOoO they put special hoses you had to get from GM. And now they're NLA. I really despise GM.

Anyway, I came across this fitting, M16-1.50 with O-ring (what GM used for fuel supply lines) to 3/8" hose barb. Dorman 800-170

I ordered one to patch in between the fuel sending unit/pump and the fuel filter, but one could use it for an in line fuel filter setup for IDIs if you want one for some reason, using cheap common metal GM filters. The filter is female on both sides, so two of these and a filter gives you 3/8 hose barbs on both sides.

They're on rockauto for cheaper. Look up a mid 90s GM truck with 5.7/350 to find them easily.

The Viton o-rings are in kit # 800-013 (it'll have the 5/16 ones also) if you need replacements.

Maybe that'll be helpful for someone wanting an easy to replace in line fuel filter with 3/8" hose barbs.

Parts geek, lines to go and even auto zone just to name a few have the factory lines you’re looking for, any and all fuel lines for that truck. I’d bet money eBay has them. Probably even Amazon. You guys are funny. I can get any factory part made for a 1940 ford pick up. You can for sure find all factory parts for a 1994 Chevy. It’s not old or rare in any way shape or form. They made millions of them in 1500-2500-3500-Tahoe-suburban…. You don’t need to hack up a fuel system. Just do 10-15 seconds of research on the interwebby and parts will come up.

Tech note. That’s for low pressure. You have a high pressure tbi efi system. That’s for push on low pressure carb set ups.

Not for efi high pressure system. Just look at the fittings. I think Chevy got it right. Just put stuff back to stock and stick hacking up a perfectly good truck for no reason.

I could only find 5/16 ones in metal when looking several years ago. I stuck a pair of 5/16 ones between the tanks and new FSV on the big IDI RV and they didn't seem to restrict the flow, with a Holley red.

This is the crap GM put. The fuel pressure on a new, properly running 350 TBI fuel pump is about 9-13psi, so it's stupid and uncalled for to have such heavily built, special hoses. GM saw dollar signs and went with special lines you could only get from them. Now you can't get them at all. So, I'll run standard 50psi max fuel hose with fuel injection clamps. I ordered adapters to change the fuel sending unit's M16-1.5 and M14-1.5 o-ring fittings to 6AN and then to 3/8 and 5/16 hose barbs, so any off the shelf sending unit for this will go right on, no need to hack things up. The only lines I'll be chopping up are the ones up on the front where they just need to be passthrough lines. I'll be cutting out the crimped on hose section and replacing with brass compression to 3/8 and 5/16 hose barbs and universal hose.

We are working on a IDI diesel lift pump system correct? About 5 psi or so pressure?

edit: i found the front ones from one seller but how old are those rubber lines? would you trust 20 year old rubber fuel hoses? and it's $110+27 shipping+tax for only the ones by the engine

Ok you were somewhat right. Somewhat.

Dorman makes these.

But you still have to cobble it together, because it's not a direct fit. I'd have to cut off most of the steel lines and still use compression fittings (unions). Those hoses would cost about $90 for all 4 I'd need (2 of each), plus some compression unions in both 3/8 and 5/16.

Might as well adapt it to regular 50psi fuel hose with gm to an6 adapters, an6 to hose barb adapters, and compression to hose barbs for less money. Then regular, off the shelf 3/8 and 5/16" hose would be what it uses.

Where those fittings come in handy, is using the lift pump off of the 6.5 diesels on other applications.
The filter for the tbi application is rated at 4mic, but most all I have cut open in the last 10 years or so have a tiny little element in them.
