i have a 83 6.9. Lift pump is an electric in line and has worked good as long as I have had the truck. Lots of fuel at the schrader valve on the filter. I started the truck after a big dump of snow to move for plowing. Had it idling for about 10 min while shoveling it off. Went to move the truck and it just wouldn’t make any RPM eventually it wouldn’t even idle without full throttle then wouldn’t even start. Still lots of fuel from the electric pump. Right before this it was starting to get a real bad surge if you were just rolling down the road barely giving any throttle. It would smooth out when I would give it more throttle. Also seemed to develop a bit of a rough idle over the last few times I drove it. It’s just my bush/sledding truck so it doesn’t get used a lot. Thanks for any help.

It’s possible the filter in the nose cone could have clogged from the fuel icing up, I would make sure the fuel filter isn’t clogged, the air inlet isn’t clogged and that connecting the front prong on the injection pump with the key on makes a solid click from the fuel solenoid.

Where is the filter in the “nose cone” is that the filter under the hood on the passenger side of the engine where the schrader valve is? Just wondering if there’s another filter somewhere. I didn’t think about gelling. I can’t remember if I filled the truck with winter diesel in the fall. Could be full of summer fuel still.

If you have a place to get some Hot Shot Winter anti-gel, put some in your fuel filter and the rest in your tank(s). Let it idle for a while. Should take care of that problem.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m heading out to my cabin next weekend and will see if I can get it going. I will probably take a new filter with me. Cheers!!

Make sure you read the Hot Shot label before you open the container & do not get it on your skin.;)

I believe that it's in the back side of the injector pump where the fuel inlet comes in.

That's my thought too. You have to remove the fuel line coming from the fuel filter, and maybe the next threaded section, and then you find the IP filter. It's a little cone shaped screen. You must literally use a mirror to see it if the IP is mounted on the engine.

If the nose cone filter is clogged you might as well get the pump rebuilt, if you want to replace the nose cone filter you will need to remove the pump and clean it completely first to avoid contaminating the pump. After you have done that and removed the injection lines, remove the nose cone keeper at the top of the nose cone, and unscrew the nose cone, keeping track of the o ring that will come with it. Next you will see the filter, if it is clean leave it alone, if not, remove the filter by lifting it straight up to not disturb the transfer pump assembly and clean it out with brake clean or acetone, being sure it is dry and completely clean before installing back into place by dropping it straight down extremely carefully. Next clean the nose cone with a polishing wheel and remove any buildup inside it with a light brass brush. Screw the nose cone back on with the o ring, and torque it to 30 ft lbs, there is a specific stanadyne tool for torquing the cone, however you can get by with a 12 point socket. The torque spec is critical that it is accurate since it affects the thrust load for the entire pump. After you torque it, reinstall the keeper and torque it to 26 INCH lbs and make sure the pump rotates properly.

I would change the main fuel filter and treat the fuel before condemning the pump.

Yeah, gelling comes to mind... Doesn't the 6.9 have fuel heater built into the filter head like the 7.3?
Nobody's mentioned plugging it in and just leaving the key on for about 5 min will or should ungell the fuel in the filter head...

Because the fuel heater design doesn’t work, it’s at the top of the filter housing, gelling happens at the bottom of the filter

Also, the fact that it's a 1983 and the fuel heater is on the hard line that goes from the lift pump to the filter head makes it impossible to plug off.

Awesome info. This is much appreciated. I only payed 1400$ for this truck and it never leaves logging roads. Spends most its life crushing in 3rd gear at about 50-60km/h. If I can just clean things up that’s great. Do you ship pumps to Canada if I need one?

Check with your Canadian customs and import people before you order one. I've heard that they want a whole bunch of your money when you import car parts from down here. Your better idea is to have it shipped to a friend on our side of the border, and then go down for a visit.

I ship inside the US for free, so if you can arrange to pick it up from a buddy, that will save you some coin. If not I’ll ship to wherever you need it for whatever ups charges ground for a 32 lbs 12x12x12” box. I’ve shipped plenty of times to Canada no issues, even sent my pumps to Australia, New Zealand, Germany, no issues there. But if I ship to Virginia the box shows up beat.
