Another interesting customer’s truck, 1985 crew cab f350. Has 7.3 and zf5 from a 92, hypermax turbo and intercooler. Front end is a Chevy axle with superduty steering and springs. Came in for timing and tuning, swapped out the intake hat with a better one I had and redid some intercooled pipes to fix some boost leaks. Maxed out the stock pump at 15 psi of boost and egts 400* lower than what they were previously

Yessir, actually fixing to do a restore on it, I was thinking of making a thread on it if anyone would be interested. We’ve got a couple of these old ford diesel tractors, our 1969 jd450 has 37,000 hours on it.

Cool man. I'm such a sucker for old iron.
I'm probably the only farm hand on earth that wishes he'd run older tractors lol

I'm game. I have an 8n I'll be working on so I could use some tractor based inspiration.

Here are my two IDI's, Briar Rose and Black Rose. Briar Rose is a 1997 Samson Lobster Boat with a 94 IDI (star powr) non-turbo with just under 1k hours. Black Rose is my 1989 f350 IDI with just under 150k. Both are used to help me harvest lobster for Little Rose Lobster Company. Both these engine are what reliably get lobster to my customer's all over the country.

1975 Ford 3/4 ton "Highboy". Truck originally had a 360 FE, swapped it to 6.9 idi out of an 84 F250 years ago, a friend blew the engine while I was away for a few years. Swapped a 7.3 idi back into it last December. I used the 6.9 pump on the 7.3 so I doubt its timed right. Pyro installed and fuel turned up to a hint of smoke at full throttle, loaded. EGT's don't break 900. 7.3 idi non-turbo, np435 4 speed, divorced np205 t-case, Dana 60 rear, Dana 44 closed knuckle front, 4.10 final drives. Stock suspension, 33" tires. Not the prettiest girl at the ball but it's done everything I've asked of it. Truck currently resides at dad's farm but eventually I'll be out of school and be able to start restoration.

I've considered swapping the 429 in my highboy with a 7.3 IDI. What did you use for motor mounts?

I used the 7.3 mounts. The 360 cradle mounts unbolted from the highboy frame and I took the cradle mounts from the 1984 pickup and bolted them to the 7.3 mounts on the engine, bolted it to the transmission and hung it in place with the engine hoist and used angle iron to fab up the frame mounts and weld them in place. Still bolts in easily and has rubber mounts. I've got pictures somewhere I'll try to find tomorrow and post. (Its easiest to pull the whole front clip off for this project) You'll have to notch out a cross member a few inches for the 7.3 to fit, I ended up welding a piece of angle iron into it inverted so as to maintain some structural integrity. I have pictures of that as well. Otherwise, it was fairly simple. Use the bellhousing and hydraulic clutch from the 7.3 donor and it bolts right to the trans (if you have the 4 speed). The valve cover is close to the booster but it fits. You'll want a good radiator. Haven't had issues with my aftermarket aluminum unit. I used the coil wire to put 12 volts to the pump and put in toggles for the fuel heater and cold idle/cold advance. Momentary switch to a starter solenoid for the glow plugs. It's not worth trying to merge the wiring harnesses on an engine as simple as the idi. If you have questions feel free to pm me.

The crossmember that has to be notched.

Angle iron motor mounts. I avoided welding over the FE mount bolt holes in case I decide to convert back to gas. Please excuse the bird s**t welds. If you decide to do this conversion please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm not an expert but perhaps you can avoid some of the mistakes I made.
