Why wouldn't you boost when revving?

Not enough load on the engine to make boost. Mine free revving makes a few psi but thats just because the 093 has such a small exhaust housing.

But still only at 10 max, it also looks like oil is in my boost line could this be causing problems with it?

Try adding 12v to the cold advance and seeing if that affects your boost numbers.

Don’t worry about that, it’s normal. It’s actually more out of the ordinary to have boost when free reving the engine

i had a TDI VW guy tell me something is wrong if i don't make almost full boost when just reving the engine.

he didn't understand why it would only make a pound or two and i tried to explain its normal but he didn't get it.

maybe since those turbos are the size of my intake piping they make boost just reving?

I have a 60-1 intake wheel factory turbo so same exhaust wheel as 093

I'll try the cold advance truck but when on it defiantly sounds and acts way to advanced. It's wired to a switch already

And if you feel the timing is off then scribe or punch a mark where it is lined up now and play with it till you get the results you want

They came factory with small VGT turbo's (minus 96-97 passat and 98 jetta) in an effort to get boost low in the rpm range so there was no lag compared to the gas engines for a more pleasurable car driving experience.

Got a lead on a Holset HX40 non waste gated, bit of a drive but might be worth it.

On the topic of a wastegate. Is it better to have an internal wastegate, no wastegate, or external wastegate? A wastegate limits boost pressure correct? I have read that they can either be controlled via vacuum, electronic, or simply by spring force.

Non gated turbos will spoil faster but tend to have smaller exhaust wheels meaning higher back pressure amounts but faster boost, non wastegate wil usually have a larger exhaust side meaning slower spool up, but will have Lower egts and can max out a little higher in the rpm band. At least with my expierince with ats 088(non gated) and my factory/093 turbo which has a wastegate. They are adjustable by boost. Our motors don't have any sensors to run boost controllers

External all the way. Waste gate controls boost but it also controls drive pressure, which is an important part in tuning

So much this. Timing on a turbo motor is usually a little different than a N/A one; usually a little more retarded by a degree or two.
Probably has a lot to do with the temps being higher in the cylinder at WOT, due to the boost/charge air, which means the fuel is burning faster.

Oregon fuel injection set mine at 4' and I moved it literally a dime or less advanced from that and it seemed to feel better but idk I'll mess with it this weekend or tomorrow early before work. Swing shift makes life difficult lol
