Upgrading to electric lift pump

Hey guys,

So as a bunch of you know, I have my fuel filler neck fail some time ago which allowed rain and snow melt to seep into my fuel tank and froze and clog up just about everything from tank to filter.

Well I have a freshly cleaned tank and pickup installed, new filler neck and nozzle, new fuel lines, new filter and am trying to get the ole slug fired back up. I have now found that I seem to not be getting any fuel from my lift pump. I disconnected the fuel line from pump to filter and put a jar on the end of it, cranked for several 10 second intervals and got exactly zero fuel out of it. The line is clear, the line from tank to pump does have fuel in it, just nothing coming out of it.

I unbolted the mechanical lift pump and the arm has almost zero travel on it. I dont remember how much travel these have when new, but mine moves maybe 1/8 of an inch and stops dead. I submerged the intake side in a jar of fuel and hand pumped for a good while and it never pushed any fuel out the other side.

So, I am interested in these Dura Lift electric pumps. I have ordered one along with the brass fittings and the block off plate. Totaled about 132$. I will post more once I receive them on tuesday.

My experience with the Duralift is mixed. Reliable. Easy priming. Solves a lot of issues with getting air purged after running out, changing filter etc. The down side for me was not enough volume to maintain pressure during high demand. I have a turbo and turned up pump and tow. It took 2 Duralift pumps in parallel to maintain 6.5 psi. On a stock truck that is driven conservatively they are great. Not for high demand, they are designed for a 4 cyl ****** engine.

What model did you get? This one is rated 9-11psi / 33 GPH.

Yeah I am a little surprised at that as well. I thought the electric duralift pumps ran at a higher pressure and volume than the stock mechanical lift pumps.

Either way, my truck is a stock 94 7.3 N/A. I dont do a ton of towing, mostly hauling loads of firewood on the bed. I do have a banks turbo setup for it that I want to install this year. Either way, my primary objective is to get it running and running reliably. I had told myself that when this mechanical lift pump fails, I would install an electric in it's place. Unfortunately the mechanical pump that I had installed a few years ago failed earlier than expected and I have now been without my plow truck this entire winter.

So, would you guys recommended the Holley pumps and a good fuel pressure regulator?

What is the latest wisdom in this?

Searching old threads just gives olds information; I'm curious what the current consensus is.


Ps- I ran the Duralift on my '86 dually. It definitely made for a quick starting idi. I'm glad folks figured out it's limits.

Yes the holley for sure, some are playing with a walbro marine??? I dunno nuthin on that.
Read up first, a fair amount of new info has been posted.
The oem FORD mech pump seems to be another winner.

Walbro FRB-13 is what I am now running. DO NOT run Carter's anymore. They used to be good, not anymore. Terrible reliability now.

I run the Walbro... awesome pump.

The return line at the top of the fuel filter bypasses a lot of fuel. Put a clamp on that and choke it down a bit; I am sure any e pump will work.

The big problem I have with those is that they are obviously made in china. I just received my Seachoice facet pump, cost me a hair over 100$ and its made in America.

I would not run the Holley Red again. I went thru 2 of them & they have a very fine screen mesh inside that stopped up on both of them & burnt out the motors. I ran a prefilter with each of these but the screen was so fine that it still stopped up. I am running the Duralift at present & have not had any problems with it but will probably go with the Walbro when this one plays out.

Oh, don't get me wrong... I'd LOVE to buy 100% American made, but on my budget? It's impossible.

A couple years ago, I bought a $25 Estwing claw hammer because it was made in USA vs $10-15 imports, but $10-15 is a lot different from $75-80.

American made doesn't always equal better quality these days too. American goods sometime skimp on quality to keep the cost down, due to higher labor cost than overseas. A lot of cheap, horrible quality plastic goods are made in USA still.
