It might be worth boiling a bit of Lucas down(like, on the stove) and see what happens. See what it does when exposed to way-too-high temps.
Also, worth trying for regular engine oil.

I remember in a diesel engine class years ago, the instructor took a little steel pot, poured some Delo 400 into it, and heated it with a torch until it smoked. It wouldn't pour out of the can. We called it Jello 400.

If that engine overheated badly, it might have cooked the oil even if it wasn't Lucas.

Yep, you dont want to run it like that, but if youve ever seen the inside of an engine that has a bad lift pump fill the crankcase with diesel, the inside looks immaculate like it just came out of a hot tank.


Once had sticky lifters on my dad's newish 351M Ford engine. A mechanic friend had us fill the crank case with diesel, start it and run it for a few seconds, until the lifter noise quieted. It was probably well under 30 seconds. We put another 150,000 miles on that engine afterward, so we got away with it.

One important note is a gas engine won't runaway on diesel blowby. An IDI however would!

Lucas is fine in an engine that really needs it......... I have used Lucas(and STP) in engines that where on there last legs for years. If you need oil pressure , or you just want the engine to not burn as much oil any of these "thickeners" might be the ticket. but i don't think anyone would really be shocked if that engine finally died, this is a band aid nothing more and if you want a few months or years out of a junker......it's a really good thing to try.

Use it on a "good" engine......NEVER!

As soon as the cast header gets warm to touch yer done!

Yes, we got away with it. I'm still not sure it was a good idea.

Interesting. There's a YouTube channel called Project Farm and the guy does some great tests on oil and oil additives. I've been running Amsoil in my diesels for a while now and after seeing the results of his tests I will continue. As far as additives go Motorkote is pretty impressive, Slick 50 not so much.

Dad had a 79 F150 with the 351M in it. We did a full rebuild after cleaning the block. When it first started it had good oil pressure but eventually it would come down to around 5psi. Tried an oil cooler and an high pressure pump but that was it. Not sure what the problem was but something wasn't right. Think Dad scrapped the truck.

Yup. Several members have experienced that. (Iirc one had a engine from jasper, the ip was leaking out the shaft seal)

Mine did this, wasn't a reman but was a lot less than fun flying uphill on the highway..

when I do my oil change I like to drain the oil and then run 5 gallons of diesel through the crankcase to clean and flush any more oil and crap out.

Usually I do this too. Diesel cleans things up a bunch.

However, (for those that don't already know better) DO NOT use gasoline!!! I hate to admit to this but several yr ago I changed my oil, didn't have any diesel handy, so I decided to pour thru there about 4 gal of gas I had. Poured it in & let it sit about 30 min while I did some other stuff.

Dropped the gas out, put the oil & filter in/on. Fired her up to ck for leaks. Didn't even make a complete revolution & there was a very loud "KER-BANG" & smoke flowed from EVERY crack & crevice on that 7.3. Internal gas fumes "lit off." Was lucky that nothing was hurt!

Maybe someday I'll start a "BOO-BOO" thread & we all can fess-up & list our boo-boo's, close calls, & near misses..... LOL LOL

Hopefully you didn't proceed to wash them in [leaded] gasoline with your bare hands in your kitchen...
