Front cover removal

Hello I have a 94 cclb 4x4 roll a long package with e40d trans and 7.3 idi in it...
The 7.3 idi took a **** so I got a free 6.9 idi out of a school bus and it had manual Trans on it and the block I believe is a 86
I swapped in the 6.9 motor and noticed the front cover doesn't have a place for tac sensor which is not good because e4od needs tach to shift right?
And I was wondering can you remove the covers without removing the gears I have a deadline to get this ***** going again Cuz I'm using my bosses shop and we gotta big job coming in on Wednesday lol....I'm a Welder and want this to be my work rig and hope to carry a flatbed and Lincoln on the back..thanks for the help

I know how to take ip off and and the 3 bolts under the cover hold it to gear so couldn't I just unbolt front 3 bolt that mount pump and pull the 4 to the cover

Should work, just make sure the gear doesn't jump time

I want to add a tach to my 83 so I asked a similar question. I was told it can be done, just be carful not to move the gear. If you do move the gear, you can find tdc on cyl 1 and get the gear with in one tooth. It’ll be a ***** if the gear moves but it’s doable. You could always swap in a zf5

Is there a way to tell if it does move or not and any insurance to make sure it don't move.... feel like the ip will lose timing when I take the 3 bolts in front out

And yes I wish I had a 5 spd I don't care for tach on auto trans but stupid e4od needs it I'll attempt taking the one off old motor first and them I'll do the new one

I hope for an answer lol I really don't want to mess up the timing or if there is another way around not using the tac

The wiring is doable, Id recommend buying an electrical service manual for your year truck and following that to setup your truck with what it needs. If you dont have the computer and the wiring harness for the transmission already then you need to get it out of the parts truck. I made a standalone harness from scratch to put an idi and e40d in a 43 ford cabover project, it worked but it is more wiring than I intend to ever attempt again.

If it was me doing this, I'd be pulling the front engine cover off (the one behind the water pump). That's the only way that I'd feel comfortable enough doing this job. It's a lot more work, but you can guarantee that your gears are still in time this way. Also, yes your pump will no longer be in time after you pull it. Nothing that can be done here, just the nature of the beast.

Also you can reseal the front cover while you're in there. It is SO much easier to work on an engine when it's not in the truck

Edit: oops, looks like it's already in the truck! Still probably worth it.

Yes, you can change out the cover. It's not that big a deal.
Before you take the IP off, do yourself a favour and line up the timing mark on the crankshaft to TDC. Take the lemon cover off and make sure the dowel pin for the IP is in the 4 O'clock position. With that done, even if something goes sideways, you'll be in good shape.

Worst case, if the timing gear jumps, follow the instructions in the link below. You'll be able to skip the first part, cuz the engine will already be at TDC.

Not sure about where to mount it at just wondering if it would work
