Why does my rebuilt turbo from Conestoga diesel have a bent/broken housing?

Not saying you bud and I would have came to the same conclusion...

Mainly those getting on him for not contacting Mel first when all he did was ask if it was safe to run... He wasn't bad-mouthing Mel at all which some where getting a bit touchy about. That was all I was getting at.

I beleive the wording in the title sparked some debate on that one.
Unlike. " is it safe to run my new rebuilt turbo with an issue with the housing"
Just my 2 cents

I have to mention that i called in to order two replacement o-rings for the compressor housing, gave them my CC number and they showed up today with an invoice that said no charge. That's great customer service considering my cutting the o-ring was no fault of theirs.

I have had oil all over the out side of my intake before I started the pump swap, I thought it was maybe from intake hat leaking but now I'm wondering if was turbo leaking through the o-ring and missing housing piece? I'm going to clean everything up and keep and eye on where the oil comes from.

I mean that the oil may be leaking through that oring from the cdr. There's oil in the compressor housing from it and it's pressurized. I'm going to red rtv over it. Intake had oil mist on it in exterior below turbo.

That rtv will work fine. You really did not need it but I understand the need for insurance...:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I was unsure how the o-ring would seal without a back to press against it. I figured it was best to go ahead and RTV is now while i had it clean then later when it leaked and was coated in oil. I did have oil all over my intake that i assumed was from the intake hat leaking so i RTVd this and the intake hat, RTVd the pedastal into the gromet to make sure crank pressure isnt coming up through, the gromet is RTVd and i put about 8 or 10 holes in the valley pan baffle to make sure oil isnt backing up from there haha. Almost done with the water intercooler too

The o ring is supposed to seal against that piece that is missing......how could the turbo possibly be shipped out like that?

The silicone fix and being under that clamp will probably work though. It absolutely would have leaked without it.

When we rebuild a turbo, we have to work with the cores we are sent. Some are better then others, admittedly. We wish they all looked perfect. When we rebuild, we consider how the turbo will WORK. If we deem a part suitable for service, then it goes together and we warranty it. Sure, we could put all new parts into a turbo to make it look perfect, but then you wouldn't buy it because it would be a new turbo, and you don't want to pay a new turbo price. So, compromises have to be made to produce a product that is of high quality with regard to function and durability (which honestly, when your hood is closed, is what you care about), and price. We don't expect people to take stuff apart and nit pic the insides. If you had a problem with how it works, or there is a boost leak, obviously that is a warranty issue and we would deal with it accordingly. We want customers to feel comfortable in using products from us, and obviously if there is something we need to do to make it right, we would want to do so.
I spoke with Shawn on the phone, and he seems to be satisfied with the situation so, onward and upward.

Mel has assured me the turbo is in a fine condition to run with missing piece as it was shipped to me.

He's replied to the thread a couple times and called me on the phone saying he did. To be honest if they had told me the core they had had a broken housing and dented compressor housing I would have had them wait until my core got there to rebuild it. I would not have put this turbo on my truck. It's been on my truck almost 5 months so there's not much I can do about it. I only discovered the problem when I went to clock the turbo and the o ring came out from the back of the housing, which I don think should have happened if the piece wasn't already missing. And Im not sure the piece could have fallen out with that bracket in place. I am really thinking the oil I thought came from the the intake hat was actually coming from this damaged area.

Well it looks like its still leaking some oil from the CDR in this area. I guess my next investment will be buying a new turbo. This one will be fine for a while but i'll definitely be replacing it and going with a 3" oulet to hopefully get a better seal on the downpipe than the factory too so it wont be a total waste.

As I'm not following every post, might ask russ about his stash of oem parts.
