Whats the thermostat #?

I had to use my Spare Thermostat yesterday. Local Ford Stealer wont deal with any car/truck over 10 yrs old and I'm no where near a IHC dealer. I was gunna look on Fleabay for one. THX

They won't sell you a thermostat? That seems just wrong. They should be able to look up parts and order them for you at the service desk.

Nope. Nothing over 10 yrs old. Told me to hit the road and go to A-Zone.Theres another place in town that can get some factory stuff but I need the Ford part#

A quick search brought up this...
CAUTION:
The specified/required thermostat does not contain an internal bypass, since the bypass is located in the cylinder block. Whenever the thermostat is replaced, it is mandatory that only Motorcraft E5TZ-8575-C or Navistar 1807974C94 thermostat be installed.

CAUTION:
Do not attempt to repair any thermostat. It should be replaced if it is not operating properly.

Check the any new thermostat before installing it for correct opening temperature. Before suspending in boiling water, with a flashlight check where the rubber and the flat metal flange meet for bad seal. Tstat should start to opening barely at 180-192f, fully open 200-212f, allow to cool and check for rubber seal again.*

Removal: Disconnect batteries, drain 4+ gals A/F, remove: as required, fan belt, alternator set aside, alt bracket, remove filter support from fuel filter then e/block. Disconnect upper rad hose at rad, remove tstat bolts and housing. Clean both faces, depression and holes in block, ensure check ball in goosekneck is clean, free and rattles "do not remove".
Installation is reverse proceedure, I do not use sealant on gaskets and faces. REMEMBER the tstat pellet(copper end) goes into the block. I do use a "very small amount" of sealant on the edge of the tstat face when installing into the recess, now go for coffee, allow sealant to setup, this has saved me from tstat slippage when the gasket and goosekneck are installed. Replace all items in reverse order......

Manifold bolt torque......... 20ftlbs


Absolutely go with the Motorcraft tstat, don't trust anything else. It seems that they are not proven parts like the Motorcraft one is.

Let us know how it holds up. I have heard nothing but horror stories about these other tstat failing. And the job to replace it isn't something i would like to do more than I have to.

I actully used my spare stat in my jeep. The idi and jeep\ford\chevy stat are the same in the aftetmarket. No luck with aftermarket ones in my jeep either.i figured that if its good enough for my idi its good enough for my jeep.

If you guys are installing the after market thermostats that looks very much like the original ones look closely at it. If it says China on it that will fail. Several members have tried using them and they all break 2 of the three legs on the top.

This is what there supposed to look like. When you do replace it, make sure the ball check in the goose neck is free, shake it and it should rattle, if it's missing, the coolant will be constantly bypassing the t'stat. It's purpose is to let any air out of the head, then closes when coolant flows thru it, liquid closes it.

mine is a motorcraft one i did have a stant in there and it was almost broken.. the motorcraft one gets a lot more heat into the cab.
