what is the easiest way to achieve 300hp with an IDI (not Cummins)?

I am looking to get between 300hp and 350hp what is the easiest way to achieve that I have to get all of the work done within 6 weeks cause when school starts I wont have time to do much work to my truck and i have to use it as a daily driver. I am taking the truck to get painted Thursday and while its gone I plan on ordering some parts for it. I just dont know what i really need.

the two easiest ways:
1. Buy a Ford 351w. I'd say a good running engine with heads, intake, cam should do it no problem.
2. Drive down to Louisiana and get dyno tested. It is quick, easy and probably the cheapest option out there.

One, slightly harder way:
1. Get a moose pump, new injectors, and a turbo system. This very well may get you up to 250hp... maybe even 275, hard saying. Of course numbers are just numbers... this will make the truck 100% more driveable in the modern enviroment.... accelerating onto a freeway for instance will be a simple matter.
If you happen to find a perfect used turbo system that is complete, the whole project should cost you are $2500-$3000. (sure makes the trip the Louisiana seem cheaper)
Figure $1000 for the fuel system, and at least $1000 for the turbo (if used).

All the above plus a 4 inch straight piped exhaust system. Then some water methonel injection. Now this 300 to 350 hp you want... Is that at the rear wheels or the crank... It makes about a 100 hp differance where your talking about...

Just kidding. Why do you want/need 300? A daily driver would be fine stock, or even just adding a turbo.

300 flywheel ain't hard really. Decent turbo, most use the ats 093 with wastegate wired shut. Studded headse. Intercooler usually. And as much fuel as you can without blowing the pyro, properly timed with fresh fuel system and hopped up pump help. 300rwhp is a different story... Cam grind, etc

If you want to show off at school your money is better spent elsewise. why drop several grand on it when you coulda got an easier engine or used it for college

thanks for the info. to the rear wheels. The reason i want more power is that i have to pull a 38ft gooseneck enclosed trailer with a modified in it every weekend and it would help if i had more power. what turbo is best recommended?

seriously you can get 300+ at the wheels pretty easily with a PSD. a quick look at the dyno # thread shows that even the hottest IDIs aren't making that kind of power.

or you can pick up a V10 SD cheap and get similar towing performance as a hopped up IDI. they are thirsty though

a lot of IDIs are pulling big trailers well though. to me HP is just a number as long as the job is getting done safely. but then i have never been one to mod my trucks, much.

Hypermax has best customer support. I'd do them.

Banks has the hardest to source parts stiff, ats was the stock supplier so there's tons of ats parts but the company doesn't support as much.


A brand new turbo is gonna cost a whole lot. Look for a good used one and save about 2/3rds the cost. Use that savings there to get a moose pump or dps pump and some new or good reman BB injectors and studs for the heads.
Cold air ram intake or hypermax cowl it. No need for a muffler when turboed since it's quieter.
That alone won't get you 300 rwhp but would be pretty decent. You'll want a cam grind, propane and/or water **** and an IC so you can nearly max the fuel screw for more power. I think I saw a dyno number around here showing propane gave a 30hp gain +/-. Having that kick on when needed (hills) would help you pull.

The mechanical fan on these engines Rob some power too, swapping to electric fans ain't too hard. You can get them at a junkyard I forget which vehicle was popular here to Ron em from but I wanna say ford 3.8l. There are wiring kits for 30-50 online to make setup easy as pie with a thermal trigger you place on the radiator to kick fans on & off.

Much more then that is going pretty hardcore for 6wks

Ok here is what you do. Mel Agne AKA Agnem on here was showing off a brand new chip for the IDI at the rally over the fourth of July. I highly suggest that you contact him about it. It is not on the market for anyone to buy just yet but has been fully tested and all the bugs have been worked out.

Before it hits the market the price will be lower but once it hits the market then the price will probably double. This would be the cheapest and fastest way to acheive the HP that your looking for.

Also make sure you ask him about the variable HP model. That chip was engineered for three different phases of driving and they are regular driving but the truck will perform as if it has a turbo, Tow mode where the truck will perform as if it has a turbo, intercooler and a modified transmission (Automatic or manual) and the third mode is race mode where it will make your truck do 12's in the quarter mile.

Also the 12 second mode is useful on the street if you want to smoke someone out and get away from them fast. It is also useful if your having a barbecue and the mosquitoes are bothering you. All you would need to do is drive to the end of your street, put it in race mode and mash the go pedal to the floor, in gear of course as the truck needs to be moving. Mel gaurantees that the mosquito problem will be gone for a minimum of four hours.

Seriously though, this thread is a breath of fresh air. Finally someone comes along asking for a number that seems within reasonable reach. Looking at the dyno results, it seems a Moose Pump and Moose Mister combo will give you 50-60 HP and 100 ft. lbs over a stock turbo setup, leaving you somewhere in the low 200's for RWHP and low 400's for torque. Those are decent numbers, and obviously somewhere near 300 HP at the crank. Now, if someone could see there way to get a Super Moose, and you could get a turbo configuration that would stuff 20 pounds of intercooled air in there, I don't see any reason why we couldn't add another 50-60HP and 100 ft. lbs of additional power to our already respectable number. All it takes is one person to try it, but I've had no takers yet, mostly because nobody has a $2K budget they are willing to throw at the attempt.
