what is the easiest way to achieve 300hp with an IDI (not Cummins)?

why are you buying a turbo kit? maybe i missed something, but dont you have a 94 turbo idi?

and obviously bigger boost numbers aren't everything. even intercooled boost, some systems are more efficient than others. i remember reading about hennessey's 1500hp viper a while back, they said by changing the plumbing around on their intercooler system they lowered how much boost they made but gained 300hp. Pretty substantial.

Yeah you're essentially buying again what you already have unless I'm mistaken. Really it appears that the lack of cool air to burn the full amount of fuel you could get from a Moose or DPS fuel system is the limiting factor, that and the ability to keep the heads on. I don't know how reliable it would be but you could probably get away with doing the head gaskets with studs and a fresh set of copper or hylomar coated Victor Reinz or Fel-pro gaskets. An HX35 or H1C turbo is great on a Cummins, but no one has really tried it on an IDI yet. Rumor has it that the hot side is pretty close to a bolt on with the HX35 although the fitment is pretty tight at the stock location. It is not bolt on completely though and someone will have to try it before we know how hard it really is to get it to work economically. The ATS 093 and ATS factory kit will make the 20+ PSI boost for awhile at least, it's been proven, but just how much you lose due to superheating the air and in system longevity are unknowns.

My thoughts.....build a

6.9

machine/drill out and tap the head bolt holes in the deck for 9/16" studs...if possible? Ohhh Gary.....Oh Gary...in yer opinion can this be done?

Line hone crank journals and deck for square.

If boring out cyl is needed....minimal bore you can get away with.

Lower CR pistons, teflon coated sides, ceramic coated tops, either aluminum or teflon pin buttons with O rings for sealing.

Seeing as I have not had a good view of pistons ONE IN MY HANDS I don't know what one can do with em that hasn't already...

Balance the entire rotating and reciprocating assembly to within 1/8th gram if you can.

Port heads....or have them "Extrude Honed" have the Pre cups ported/cc'd

Port intake or have it extrude honed, along with exhaust manifolds...or have a set of short tube custom anti reversion headers built/or build them

read/bug/talk with everyone you can on a custom turbo setup, with a large diameter cross over and 3 or 4" down pipes and a decent IC

Moose pump, or Super Moose, Most definitely moose misters,

Type4 cam, stiffer exhaust valve springs, dunno but I am sure we could find roller rockers..

FASS or similar setup from tank to injection pump, regulated to say 7PSI

...Oh of course one would need to deburr and bottom tap and clean every orifice surface and part surgically clean prior to assembly

That ought to do it real well if you cannot hit 300 hp with this, then I doubt it's possible....JM2CW....

I will try to be a guinea pig. I think the cummins will be going into the black truck. Just suits it better.

I will be looking for a different turbo. Would like to keep the stock pedistal and T3 exhaust housing inlet. What will fit the pedistal mount?

20lbs of boost is all we really need. Heck the new 6.7 powerstrokes only make 20-25lbs of boost from the factory, and that generates 400hp and keeps EGT's down. The trick is to make that boost efficiently, we definatly need a bigger turbo.

That's my target boost level when I'm done with my turbo/supercharger setup as well. The stock turbos heat the air too much so I believe that any upgrade in boosting that doesn't super heat the air is a big upgrade. Take for instance, NMB2 just upgraded his up pipes and it made more power and also look at the link I posted earlier in the thread. The guy used a 99 PSD turbo and just about made 300hp. So, this signifies to me that an upgrade in boost is a perfect antidote for our problems.

Here is the easiest way to 300hp. Sell your truck, take the $2500 you have to spend and buy a powersmoke. Install a chip in the powersmoke, you are now over 300 hp after spending $250 on the chip/programmer. I love the idi for the reliability in my fleet, and cheap repair bills, but really the power sucks balls. I have had them all, set up every different way. The shortest route to big power is a 6.0, that will put you back in your seat for sure.

why do you people think you can buy a powerstroke and have 300hp with a chip? It takes a lot more than that, especially with a 1st gen which is what would be in this price range. chip, cold air intake, exhaust, and downpipe and your looking at mid to high 200s. a lot more than $250. and you can expect issues with a $3500 powerstroke, unless its a 2wd it should sell for more if its mechanically sound with at least decent sheet metal. So he'd have all his money spent on the truck and be making a little over 200 hp maybe with a chip. And have a new truck with new issues.

6.0 is 325hp from the factory, or at least my 05' was. The 97' I have is 225hp, so you can't get a 75 hp program please. And yes you can pic them up used for 250 all the time. All I am saying is it's a lot cheaper and easier with a newer truck is all. I thought I was on topic, I was trying to help him see the light, but I digress. ;Really:angel:

1st 6.0 is irrelivant, that is way beyond this price range. And that 325 is from the flywheel.

2nd your 97's 225hp is from the flywheel. With a chip you might see that much at the tires.

3rd Just because a chip says "100 hp" doesn't mean you're really gonna get 100 hp. A chip doesn't negate a mashed downpipe and restrictive intake. Without those issues fixed you add more smoke than hp.

He already stated he wants to stick with his idi, that's why this is off topic.

Sure by all means throw the $2500 at it, it's still not going to 300hp. These engine start life without a turbo at 185 or 165 depending on what you have. A factory turbo about 40hp more. Getting another 50% out of these engines is a tough task to say the least. I should know, I have no less then 15 of them on the road as of today.
