Timing cover gasket

Since nobody seems to sell the timing cover gasket separately, is it ok to use good RTV in place of the tiny paper gasket that was there? I already have the front and rear crank seals but they came without the gaskets for the plates. My mistake when ordering I guess.

If you go the RTV way use Permatex right stuff gasket maker.

How does that differ from, say, permatex blue or black?

Using a gasket maker is stated as being just as good as a gasket. If you're careful and apply it well, I'd say it's fine. For that specific application, Permatex's product selectour recommends you use UltraBlack RTV. That would be my choice as well, just based on my experience with the stuff and that it's supposed to replace a paper gasket. It's their maximum-oil-resistant formula in RTV. Others on this forum have preferences as to better Permatex products to use. I use their Ultra___ series RTV's for all of my sealing needs, and I have good luck with them. They can be hard to remove if you ever need to again, is one downside.

I prefer the right stuff gasket maker is all. Ive had very good luck with it. Ive got 50k miles on a transmission pan and oil pan that I could not get a gasket for and not a leak from it yet.

Believe it or not I used clear silicone. i was out of everything else. Clean surfaces - no leaks.

You can get the timing cover gasket. Felpro sells it and it includes a new water pump gasket and front main seal. The part number is TCS45575

I would highly suggest using the gasket and coating it with something such as hylomar. Last thing you want is coolant in the oil.

Oh I know felpro sells that kit. I just already have the crank seal and water pump gasket, so I'm trying to avoid buying a $20 kit for two pieces of paper.

Looks like I'll go with Ultra Black or The Right Stuff. I've already got some ultra black so that may be the ticket.

Ultra black or ultra grey only. Or the motorcraft equivalent, I get it free from my friend that works at Ford, some of their kits for t-case come with 2 tubes!!!!

I agree, ultra grey or ultra black. THe "right" stuff is cool because it is extremely thick right out of the tube, so less worries about letting stuff set up before use. From what I have seen with the right stuff, it hardens with age, and will have small leaks.

Ultra Black is good stuff but Ultra Grey all the way

Personally I would use the gaskets up front. That area get plenty of work when we replace a water pump. As for the rear main seal plate. Its not really needing anything but good quality RTV. Thats all we use for the oil pans and so did international just use rtv.
