Son had the rollover valve on his 99 get clogged up with dirt.It caused his tank to collapse some where strap went around it.He was getting a lot of air out of his cap when he went to fill it.Just wondering if tank not venting air could cause your lift pump any problems. He had to change his lift pump not to long ago.Last time he changed fuel filter he had to crack line at injector to get it to run had air in the lines.I guess he will find out the next time he changes his fuel filter. He drove it to work yesterday and he said when he took cap off there was no air coming out of it so it looks like the valve is venting.

WOW - Yes that would be stressful on the pumps (LP and IP). The sound he hears is actually caused by the vacuum from the tank being collapsed. They had problems with the roll over valves coming capped off from the manufacture on the early 98.5-99's - are you sure it was just plugged with crud?
