I've been wanting to build some shelves in my garage for a while now. A few days back, I realized that with L.A burning up, limber prices are going to skyrocket here soon. So before that and before Trump is sworn in and his tariffs take place, I decided that I'd better take my tail to Menards again. So I headed out to Kearney, NE at 6 AM. I did my normal three stops, spent too much money, stopped to drop off a couple of bill payments, and still got back to my garage by about 1:00. I felt pretty good about that. Then I stopped to visit a friend for a while and made tentative plans to go rabbit hunting tomorrow afternoon. I even picked up a little something for a couple of trucks whileGI was in Menards.
That Garage door Weather strip, looks like what has been mentioned in the past to replace the Hood/Cowel seal.

I bought 25 ft of it off an online site for a good price. Did the 86 and was going to do the 85. My Bro in Law has a couple trucks and was going to do his too.

I was thinking when trump gets in, wood prices would come back down. That 7/16 Chip Board was $7.65 when he was in.
Biteme got in and jumped to $70 a sheet. Was talking to a guy doing work in C o m m i e land and said it up to $90.
Last I saw here at HD was $17.
Was going to finish up the inside of the shop, (30FT) need another 7 sheets. Be nice to get that side insulated, buttoned up, and painted.

Post 12211 above mentioned the Fuel cap was leaking in the rear tank. Swapped front cap to rear tank. I had replaced the Rubber seal with a new one a while back, so swapped the two seals, and we`ll see if this fixes the leak.
Wiped down the mess on the Frame rail the Fill Tube etc... under the truck, see if that fixes the problem. I have a good vent so pressure isn`t the problem.

Put the Parking Brake arm with related pieces I painted together with the 20ton press. get back to the truck to install and realize I had the Adjuster Cable upside down. :frustrate so back to the press.

Installed it on the backing plate and the Nut won`t thread on. ;Pissed
Some how I dinge a couple threads. No problem, maybe I can clean them up with a small 3 sided File. Well that didn`t work, got too dang cold and called it quits.
Today head over to ACE Hdw to get a Die. Bolt is a 1/4" X 28.
Around $6. I hate going there, no one in there is very friendly.
get back home, took a couple turns by hand with the Die and was back in business. Installed it with a dab of Lock-Tite.

I got the top long spring on, then used a Bungee cord to hold the shoes in place. one Hook in the edge of a shoe, stretch it around the back of the Plate to the other Shoe.

Got the Shoes on lined up and all the related Springs. Had to cut a V in an old Screw driver to get those bent nails and Little Springs connected.
The whole Drum Brake set up is a fight to the end.

Dropped the Inside Bearing (that was soaking in a pan of gear oil) into the Hub, then beat in the Inner Seal. I used the Timkin Seal
Russ repair has on his site. It`s a beefy looking thing. It is triple ribbed, so looks like it will never leak.
Slipped the Hub on, outer Bearing, and ratchet nut. There is a slot in the Spindle a tab on the nut fits into. then torque it down to 55 - 65 ft lbs. Back off 5 clicks for a new bearing and 8 clicks for a used bearing. Wonder how used or miles is a used bearing? HMMM

Blow out the threaded holes with Carb Cleaner and an Air Hose so no oil is in the holes. Dip end of Axle in gear Oil and line it up to the Splines in the Differential. use a block of wood and big hammer to set the axle, has the rubber "O" Ring (starting in 85 Sterling axles).

Lock-Tite the Axle bolts and torque to 60 - 80 ft lbs.
used a HF Tire Iron in the wheel studs and against the ground to hold the Hub. Tomorrow I`ll adjust the Shoes and get the Drums on and wheels.
Then top off the Diff Oil.

It is.

Tariffs on Canada will increase the cost of lumber since we get a large part of it from them. Only time will tell what will happen down the road. Maybe the prices will come down. I know a guy who claims to have been told that lumber prices would go up by 15% after the first of the year. The only reason that I can see for that to happen would be tariffs. Of course I have no idea on stuff like that and may be completely wrong. I do believe that things will still get worse before they get better. Prices included. It's because passing a law or enacting executive orders don't cause instant effects. Fuel prices didn't shoot up on Jan. 21, 2021 despite Biden's executive orders. They took several months to rise up dramatically.

Got back from my trip, about halfway home engine started having a fuel knock. Got in the driveway and started cutting cylinders.
#4 is causing the knock. I swear I'm having rotten luck with injectors... These Russ built ones barely lasted 2000 miles.

Shouldn`t be cold with all the fires going on in southern Calif.,
Use to drive from Santa Cruz to Tracy, Ca. to load up Alfalfa.
Would load up 66 bales on my 67 1 1/2 ton International.
Some the bales would have grass in them and they were heavier,
like 135 lbs. Just about sraighten out my hooks.
It was 70 something miles ea way, and would blow through 30 gallons of fuel. It was probably $0.35 a gallon or so.
One week end we made 5 trips and hauled in 20 tons.

This was before the hay squeezes they have today, where it picks up ea dump from the Harrow Beds and loads the big trucks.
We some times hand loaded out of the big piles and other times they had these old Chevy trucks from 47`s to 53 round fender one`s. had a boom on the back with a small Brig & Stratton connected to and old car/truck axle. Had one rope going to the Master cylinder which was to stop the brake in one Drum. Other end had one of those smooth curved drums with a rope around it connected to a big Hook., with a rope off the end of it.
Stick the hook in a bale, pull on the MC rope, would quickly pick up the bale and swing to our truck. back off the MC. Bale would drop on our truck, then he would pull on the rope off end of Hook, and drop the bale, and swing back to the next Bale.
Could load 66 Bales in about 15 min or so.
Throw on the "V" Boards, which was 2 8 ft pipes with 2 chains welded on ea end so the ropes didn`t cut into the top of the load.
Sinched it down up on top with a Come a Long and a safety chain in case the Come a Long failed. And off we went to the scales.
As I remember is was around $365 a load.
I was around 30 then, and fearless and stupid the things we did then.

Still have that old truck, like to get her up and running again, pull the 345 and throw in a R&D IDI Pumped up 7.3.
Has a 4 spd and a 3 spd Brownie. OH well, in my next life.
Was my DD till fuel got to $0.55 a gallon, couldn`t afford to feed her and all the Horses back then etc...
Like the old Cow Boy said, "Spent some of my money on Beer and Women, the rest I just wasted".

The fire are in a very small area one near the beach and one in the foot hills on the west side of the mountains. Here on the east side of the mountains at 4500ft it’s super cold and dry.

Dang you are having rotten luck with injectors! Is there some way it could be the filter/fuel supply system? 2 different sets from reputable rebuilders eating poo within such a short time is nuts.

I have a wix filter mounted on the frame right after the selector valve, then there's the regular one at the engine. I replaced both last year when the first set of injectors poo'd out on me. I could crawl under there to get exact miles, but I also feel like the Russ built ones were always Kind of finniky. I would have smoky rough starts like an injector was bleeding down, opaque exhaust smoke until it got past 170f roughly, but then ran fine when hot. And it was this way every drive cycle. Now, I get fuel knock badly when I'm below 2k rpm, except at idle. Above that its barely noticeable, probably because of engine speed. But definitely have a hazy exaust when hot now.

Ill be swappig the injectors probably next weekend depending on weather. Drop the camper off of er and drive to work a few times here and there. I have yet another camping trip in February I need to be prepped for.

Sucks, no way I can warranty out these other injectors now....

Hmmmm, double filtration. Ok so not that.

That's such a head-scratcher. I guess due to the nature of the issues it's likely to be injectors. I was contemplating it being the IP but hard to say how an IP could have these issues.

Do you have a pop-tester? I found out that you can pop-test them in-engine, it's just smoky on start up. Saves a lot of time if you're just hunting for a couple goofy ones.

OH! Could it be a bad tank of fuel? Gasoline instead of diesel? Just spitballing... I know a few of us have had bad fuel from the station, not a driver error but station error.

It's the same tank of fuel from my last trip that I did last month, and I fill up at the same station I fill my tdi at, it's a high volume station so I'm not really worried about bad fuel...

I do have a pop tester, an OTC one. Once I get them out I'll give it a go.

The fuel pump is new enough, I had already sent it back to Justin to get tested once, and it tested fine at the time.

Once I get them out and tested I'll report the findings. Ive heard that the shims can break in them and cause weird issues. Or maybe just some debris in the tip. I wonder if I take it apart and clean it if that'll help...

Today I fired up the plow truck and knocked back the drifts on our road. There's a fellow down at the far end who keeps it plowed pretty well, does it while I'm at work. We haven't had much snow this winter, but we've had a lot of wind, and there is a place near the middle of the road where the new house cleared the trees and now the wind can do its worst there. It took me three passes today to get the drift thrown into the woods.

I went down to my son's place and knocked back the drifts in his driveway, too.

Edited to add: the power steering leaks a little, so I had to take the cap off and add some oil. I fumbled putting it back on, it hit the fan, and it was GONE! Oh, well, I robbed one from one of the other trucks and carried on.

It was extremely cold here today, I never even went to my trucks. @Nero, I have one picture of the 88 crew cab I got that a friend of mine took yesterday

As you may be able to tell, the flatbed is too small. Gotta do something different there. Still works as a flatbed though at least. I’ll definitely be taking the bed off and selling it nonetheless.

There is some surface rust, but only on that door and the hood. Very light.

No dents either, might be a decent start with some work… quite a bit of work.

Very nice. I see it has a pillar gauge pod on it, I assume boost and pyro at least?

Boost, pyro, oil psi, and water temp. All GlowShift gauges. They… work. Probably won’t be the end result in that regard but, eh, it’s something.

Oh and those hoop steps have got to go… either no steps or better yet… ‘old man’ style running boards.

I have never owned a truck without them, until now.
