88 7.3 zf5 hard start when cold, smokes alot when it starts ,runs rough then clears out

well i would imagine the temp outside is a bit chilly your way?? its normal when its cold outside for it to run a little rough at first and smoke on start up... my truck does it all the time

shes ok, as long as it does clear up. the white smoke is fuel, meaning some cylinders are not hot enough yet to ignite when the fuel hits it. no problem.

by the way, where is plantsville?

Cold cylinders don't burn as well as warm ones. The white smoke is fuel vapor from the cold combustion. If all is well once warmed up........that seems to be par for the course with mechanically injected IDI's.

Glow plugs (or the lack of them) contribute to rough starts too. If you have dead cylinders I'd suspect bad glow plugs in them.
