Runaway Diesels Do's And Don'ts

Are there any tech articles that cover installing a flapper valve in the intake; or parts needed? In the next couple weeks I'll be installing a turbo I bought from a member here, and figure if I can get the correct parts together, I'd like to put a valve inline.

Depends on the intake setup you are planning on using. If using the factory turbo box, I doubt there will be enough room to fit a blast gate between it and the charger.

If you plan to build your own intake out of 3" tubing... then a couple of couplers and a 3" blastgate such as this...

A couple of springs and a cable pull and you are set. They make kits but I'm having a hard time finding one at the moment. If I can, I'll post a link.

How often do you hear or see of a runnaway daily driver. Once on here I can recall a thread about one in I think near 10 years of being here

Looks like a good idea. But I wonder how long it would last in an exhaust system.

dont put it in exhaust,
1) soot
2) the engine will still be able to climb the revs and build some pressure in the exhaust. It may die or it may blow something off and continue running away. Or it may hang the valves open and damage the engine.
Putting it in the intake will not let the engine inject any more air and will stop it QUICK.

I should've clarified, meant as an option to plum it into the intake similar to the blast gates. Personally, I'd rather have a manual pull cable, but the units designed for for that (like the Powerhalt) are pricey. Figured an exhaust cutout placed in the intake could accomplish the same results in a more affordable package and still be controlled in-cab

Those blast gates look flimsy like fkr furnace ducts not a screaming engine. Something tells me they would collapse and have ZERO effect on a runnaway...

Plum a Halon gas extinguisher into air intake...like a race car....boom displace O2 and no can combust fuel.

Again I reiterate....

Two options

Remove O2 via block off plate
Remove O2 via non combustqble gas

Fuel if sucking oil cannot be stopped.

Only O2 removal is sure fire way to hqve no fire...see my pun

I recently resurrected a 671 Detroit that had been sitting for 16 years. Cracked it over with fuel shut off for a few seconds till I saw oil pressure. Removed duct from air cleaner and reangled it to a place I could easily throw a piece of sheet metal over the 5 inch rubber coupler. Pushed stop lever in and cranked her over. Lots of white smoke but no fire. Little tiny hit of ether and she fired right off and settled into a nice lopey idle. Never had to block it off but was prepared to if it happened.

Btw, if anyone knows where I can find doors for it I would be ever so greatful. 67 dodge cn900. Doors off a 57-60 dodge truck will fit too
