Power steering pump seal blew!

Driving home today , I stopped at the grocery store and on the way out I noticed a stream of fluid on the parking lot, which stopped right under my truck! The fluid is coming from around the lower power steering shaft seal.

I need some info please. What does it take to change the seal, and do I have to remove pump to do it? I am taking the truck deer hunting next wednesday, because it is hauling my house, all help is greatly appreciated, thnak you, Phil

Sorry to tell you this but its time to replace the power steering pump. Thats going to require a special pulley remover tool. Most fake *** parts stores will rent this tool to get the pulley off. No way can you get it off without ruining it with a gear puller on the outside belt diameter of the pulley.

the seal is pretty easy to replace, need a p/s pulley tool, and remove the pump from the truck

I may be mistaken on the pump part. It is running fluid from the seal at the pittman arm, was I mistaken and is this seal changable?

So the steering box is leaking? Im not sure if the seal can be replaced with the box in the truck but I have replaced entire boxes before, definitely more work then replacing a pump. Lots of used boxes at wrecking yards however

I suspect there is a snap ring in there. You'll likely have to pull the pitman arm to see it. Since you have to pull the pitman arm anyway if the seal has to come out from inside, you may as well do it while it is on the truck and have a look.

edit: transtec catalog shows all F150-550 1980-1996 use the same seal kit. So this write up should help you. About half way down it talks about the sector shaft seal. I know I've done this on a 1975 Bronco from the outside

thanks for all the responses. I bought a new gear box from Orielly's, $ 145.00, with lifetime warranty got it put in this morning, easy as cake to do. Now I am in the market for a drop pittman arm, if anyone has one at a brother in law price, lol. Heading out next wednesday, for 5 days of deer hunting and camping. only a 160 mile drive from home, hope everything else holds together.

Just wondering: why are you looking for a drop pitman arm? Your signature doesn't say you've got a lift on your truck. Long term I want to do my steering box, and I was figuring I'd get a pitman arm while I was at it, just trying to prepare, and thanks for the tip on the Oreilly's deal (I am trying to justify a RedHead box.....)

I guess I should list more stuff in my signature, I am not sure how much lift I have, since I don't know the stock height of an F350, but I am guessing it has about 4 inches of lift, which makes my drag link run uphill.

Thanks Icanfixall, I usually don't try very hard to get a deer, I enjoy the camping. I learned a long time ago, that once you shoot your gun , the fun is done and works begun! Made my hunting partner mad at me last year, because nine deer walked within 20 yards of me and I never picked up my gun, he was watching me from the other ridge about 300 yards away with binoculars and kept texting at me to shoot one. I just sat there and enjoyed their company.
