While I'm not entirely new to this forum, this is a new username.

I recently sold my 94.5 F350 crew cab drw. It had the zf-5 and had about 170k on it when I sold it. The body and interior was pretty worn out and I had severely dented the oil pan and didn't feel like dumping money into a older truck. I felt like it was going to be a never ending battle.

I'm in the market for a late 99-2003 7.3/zf6 truck.

I bought the dually because I got a really good deal on it, didn't really need it at the time but the security of knowing I could tow just about anything I would come a cross was a nice feeling.

Now I'm trying to decide between a srw or a drw. As well as 2 or 4 wheel drive.

It will most likely become a daily driver(rural area). I have a 2000 p71 crown Vic Right now that I purchased as a hold me over kinda thing until I found a new truck($380) so i might keep it to drive to and from work.

What kinda mpg differences am I going to see between a 2wd f250 and a 4x4 dually? My OBS got around 17-18 if I kept it under 65mph. But the 4.10 rear end on the highway wasn't fun.

My normal trailers I tow average between 5000-8000, although during last year I towed a 24ft gooseneck with about 13,000 pounds of hay on it a few times. Although this was all local with in 35 miles. And I've seen heavier loads moved with a srw.

In my opinion if you're going too daily drive it but not daily haul a significant trailer it doesn't make sense to run a DRW. The duals equals much more wear and tires. A dually is not near as capable off road, either.

A 99-03 with the srw will have the 3.73 gearing which I think is a good compromise between the 3.55 and 4.10 offered in the OBS trucks.

DD I would never have a drw unless I was towing a lot all of the time.

Also both my trucks are short bed as I cannot imagine trying to park a crew cab with the 8' box.

I personally won't buy a truck without a 8' bed. So I'm looking at a extended cab

ext cab and 8' is about the same length as a crew with the 6' bed. If I need 8' I flip the tailgate down and put on the bed extender.

My latest question is. Should i steer away from trucks with the 4r100? or are they pretty reliable with a 6.0 tranny cooler?

I pull a 33' 5er, weight 12,800 with mine (see Sig.). No problem. But if your only going to tow an occasional heavy load, the F250 would be what you'd want. The 4R100 is no problem with a Trucold aux. cooler. You could stick a tugger kit in it.
