Hi there

Bought an 83 f250 6.9 idi 4x4 for $500. Plan on using it for firewood.

Drove it home with white smoke blasting out the exhaust all the time. Popping noise out of exhaust also. Previous owner says he did new injectors and return lines. Triple checked the dipstick after repeated small drives, doesn't look like there's coolant in the oil. Coolant (cold or hot) at the radiator neck and overflow doesn't bubble or look out of the ordinary. IS dripping clear liquid out of tailpipe.

Where do I start folks?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Im gonna say it's a timing thing.....ill go so far as saying that its 180* out of time, or Possiblytheinjectorlines are in the wrongorder...does it crank up easy and just run? Or do you have to do an "elaborate starting procedure"?

But stick with it, these guys will have you to rights in no time, and have fun!

There's a tech 101 thread somewhere on here.
I'm going to bump stuff 4 ya later.
Hit the stickies for some light reading.

Off the top of my head....
Unburnt fuel = white smoke, injectors, wet stacking, you said it's not coolant so...

Timing could cause some smoke, but just get it set with a meter.
See the timing registry.

Condensation = dripping out the tailpipe.

First order of business...
Load it down heavy and take it out and pull some hills for 45 minutes till it's hot and sweaty.
This will often be the fix for lots of little crap.

#1, where did he get the new injectors?
I would also verify the injector lines are appropriately routed to each injector. These are similar to plug wires from a distributor cap, switch two and you have a misfire on a gas engine. Switch two on an idi, and you have fuel injected into two cylinders at the wrong time which equals "white smoke" and poor performance. and since the previous owner was wrenching on injectors,,,,,,,,
Beyond that, check for fuel contamination (water in fuel).

Before you try to attack it with a chainsaw would you consider parting it out amongst the rest of us..?

Personally, I would use a downed hardwood tree...it would burn better and be easier on chainsaw bars and chains.

Sorry...I just couldn't stop myself...

Welcome aboard...and don't mind me...

Take care,

X

P.S. Is it automatic or standard transmission..?

Thanks folks. I did just what you told me to do! Took it for a 45 min drive up hills, through the country nice and hard like everyone said to. Drove it through the gears fast and to the floor. Popped more and faster at the top end of each gear rap and seemed kind of gutless but still kept going and would seem to pull out of the gutless part at faster speeds. The white smoke mostly went away, turned to grey black, and at idle, was almost no smoke at all. Liquid and dripping that was blowing out of stack before seemed to be gone or burned off.
I was happy!

Drove it home normal. At home it started lots white smoke at idle again, and oil pressure dropped all the way (on the stock gauge) until revved it up. On the hard drive, oil pressure on the stock gauge never got past 1/3 up. Temp gauge always at about 1/3 on stock gauge too. Checked oil at dipstick, seems overfilled somewhat according to hash mark, but still no sign of coolant in oil unless I'm not seeing any for some reason. Coolant level didn't change after serious drive and still had no bubbling at idle in overflow tank. Small oil leak drip somewhere under driver side front of motor before going for the drive but seemed to quit after motor was hot and back home. Let her idle for 10 min then shut it down. Started it again in 45 min, lots of white smoke again, oil pressure was at 1/4, right under the N under the word normal. Could get it to move up to the O with a rev.

Will get you some pics soon!
Thoughts?
Thanks for the help!
