Live C6 removal, need answer!

Toasted C6 removed....pics.

1987 E350 motorhome.



Trying to figure out how to remove the shift linkage rods from the arm on the side of the tranny. Looks like plastic bushings holding them there. Anyone know how to pop these out? I tryed prying on it, just looks like it's gonna bend my screw driver, or bend the rod!

They pop out: I use a small pry bar.

I use a set of channel locks, offset it a bit, so you're grabbing the shift lever in the bottom jaw, and the point of the linkage with the top jaw. Squeeze and presto.

same trick works to put it back in.

Well shes out. Took a few hours, but came out no problem.




I think I found the problem of why I didn't make it home, it just quit, had no more gears..... umm the Torque Converter Exploded!


Once out, I took it out of the bell housing, to empty it, and I heard something loose inside, shake it, everything is loose. Flip it back around, look down hole, and see full of broken metal rings, and carnage.

Gonna bring it to a shop tomorrow to have it rebuilt.

I do must say, it was very easy getting the 4 bell housing bolts out, got all 4 out no problem from inside the cab

too bad you're not closer. I have TWO, one of them just rebuilt too.

Looks like you need a turbo on there just to make things a little more challenging.

Nice working on back of that setup isn't it.... Whats holding the engine up... Sad to see a C6 mess the bed like that but it happens sometimes. A C6 is about the easiest auto trans to rebuild. Hopefully you have a good upgrade kit and shift kit installed when it done.

I have a piece of 2x4 from the ground, to the engine block, just beside the oil pan seal. It isn't holding much, engine didn't really move at all, but just incase.


And it sure is nice dropping a trans on a van, all 4 bell housing bolts came out no problem from the top

I have an Oregon Performance low stall Diesel torque converter for a C6. It's brand new, still in the box. I never installed it. I swapped a typ4 modified 460 ZF5 instead.

Just got off the phone with the guy, looks like it won't be ready today, unless the parts come in.


Needs forward/reverse drums, pump, clutches theres a bunch of missing washers, a valve was blown out, he said it was a royal mess in there! I told 'em it drove up until the torque converter exploded a mile from home 1 day before bringing it to him.





The washer he said was missing was a plastic washer separating the drum or something, and since that was missing, everything was moving back and forth in there.

He asked me if I saw that broken washer in the pan, I said no, but 5 years ago, when I dropped the pan, I did find a bunch of broken plastic pieces, put together made a ring, so I guess that was it......5 years ago that broke!

You found the washer.

You did a good job on that C6.
Real easy for thje tranny shop to rebuild it. Open the case and toss everything out.

Helps to get the rods off if you spray them with some lubricant also.

Sounds like it's time for a ZF5 swap, don't even have to change drivelines. At least I didn't have to .

The ZF5 is the same length as a C6? Well that's good to know



But if I was to swap a ZF in the motorhome, I'd also have to re-gear. OD with 3.54 in that box won't rev high enough on the highway to use 5th gear and hold speed.

It actually works pretty good. My truck is 3.54 and the ZF-5 pulls my 5th wheel quite well. Any hill will mean a drop to 4th of course...
