Really enjoyable reading. Sadly I know nothing to support or say "nope" to this information. Further reading needed.

My only comment is that he is wrong right from the get go on one point. Iron has a melting point of almost 2400 degrees F. But he does make his point about high temps.

Was wondering who was going to catch the iron melting point mistake. Thanks Mike. Just because I read something I do not feel its gospel till I can back it up from several different sources.

Very interesting. Can't say I've ever thought of that, but it makes a good point. The pumps do a good job of venting the air before it can get compressed. That said, we all know air gets in at some point. The focal point of the article seems to be that the fluid gets compromised by repeatedly compressing it in a hydraulic system. Our fluid doesn't stay in the tank long enough to get "ruined" I would say. There are certainly other more harmful things floating around in the fuel which are of a greater concern, and which have to do with the destruction of a pump.

A 'hydraulic' system in the context of mobile equipment, etc, is a much different environment than our IP's. We get air issues with lift pumps, leak back (causing hard start), etc but I think the only time the IP would have air issues is when it is run out of fuel (ok, maybe also in an extremely neglected fuel system). I suggest that the displacement and velocity of the IP pistons are so small the there would not be sufficient negative pressure to create a bubble (from dissolved air) in the first place. Our IP's are supplied with a positive pressure that can leak out but not in.

Back to a "true" hydraulic system - one thing that the article did not mention is moisture. Any water in the system, coupled with super heating, would create a really nasty environment.
