I am currently swapping an idi turbo into my na idi and was wondering how much work is involved in an intercooler upgrade. I have found an intercooler for relatively cheap I am just wondering what size and is most of the work just piping it?
Also would I need to turn up my ip to compensate for the turbo and the intercooler? Thanks guys

You need to find out the flow of that intercooler. You need something that will handle 600 to 800 CFM.

Bigger! I have a Powerchoke cooler still for sale in great condition.
All aluminum cooler.

I used a slightly smaller cooler yet the power is so much better all day long after the install.

yes too all your questions.
yes most of the work installing an intercooler is piping it.
yes,you need to turn the fuel up for a turbo and intercooler.otherwise, you would never get the benefit from installing either of them, which is the ability to burn more diesel fuel efficiently.

if your looking to run one of the big 3 turbo kits, and n plans of installing a larger turbo, then consider a cooler many of use went with:
Overall Size: 31"x12"x3" Core Size: 24"x12'x3" #IC0022
http://www.cxracing.com/mm5/merchan...e_Code=CXR&Product_Code=IC0022&Category_Code=

most of us got them cheaper on ebay.
i went with the same one,but powder coated black.#IC0022-BLK

I used the same exact cooler on my truck.
I also used OEM Powerstroke cooler pipes
I had to reclock one pipe just a cut an reweld.
I mainly used the OEM pipes and some scrap
laying around to finish off mine.
Not the best pics but what you don't see is the OEM
pipes, Hot side and cold side, I modified them, and
purchased one 2.5 45degree pipe to finish it off.
Look on post #252 for pics below on the link.

Dare I repeat the words of someone wiser than I: While your 7.3 is out of the truck, do yourself a favor and change the oil cooler o rings:rotflmao

I just did the same swap myself and looking back it would have been so dang easy to do the oil cooler o rings while it was sitting on the shop floor.

Routing the piping is a trail and error kind of ordeal. I had a life long friend of mine TIG my pipe for me. He also had a nice large band saw to cut the pipe quickly, cleanly, and straight. I bought a 3 inch universal kit on fleebay and also got a few extra pieces from siliconeintakes.com (reducer and hump hose ....... and so on). The other problem to solve is the intake hat. It will likely have to be modified or replaced with another to work with the Factory turbo when adding an intercooler. I've seen many intercooled IDI's at Rallies, and all are done differently.... there isn't a one size fits all kit or pipe routing for every IDI.

I'd post photos..... but it isn't working for me on oilburners and hasn't for a while.
