I first need to say this.... If you don't have enough money for a pyro then you wont seem to have enough money for another motor..... I'm not trying to be a jerk but how will you know how hot you are getting the pistons if you don't have a pyro....:dunno Now thats been said turning up the fuel will increase the heat applied to the motor. How much can't really be told because noone reading this knows what your motor is showing now for the exhaust heat. Telling you a 1/4 turn is out of the question. Even turning it up any amount would be a really bad idea. Now I feel you have an idea the fire your messing with. If you really don't care about the motor then turn it up but be aware... You probably will melt it down. Smoke is heat and lots of it. Usually members turn up the fuel by the flats... There are 6 flats to the wrench. Most use 2 flats as a starting point with a pyro so they know the before and after affects. Post back as to what you do... Plenty here are watching....

Do yourself a favor, save your money for a pyro, before you turn up the fuel. Even in stock form an IDI can see exhaust temp over 1200 degs. If you spent $1400 on the truck why not wait and spend $300 on a pyro and save yourself some grief. IF you don't want to buy a pyro, 69Oiler has a long block IDI he needs to sell.clicky

i was just asking if there was a safe range... im not gonna do it now that i know theres not even a small margine i could turn it up with a chance of melting it.

also i have a question. when i rev the truck it blows black/grey then when i let off the throttle a little puff of blue/white comes out. injectors or something else?

from what you're describing, your pump is done. time for a rebuilt pump and new injectors.
if you really want to make power and you have 4-5k to spend....check out the first truck in my sig line for its specs.

Being 17 is not a problem here... Making more hp has to be done with a good starting place. The age of the motor is a good place to start. Are the injectoers and rubber return lines between each of them painted grey just like the motor??/ Now if the motor has over 100,000 miles on it and the pump and injectors are original then its time to renew them both. Mel who goes by the name here Agnem has a stock pump that beat the crap out of any stock rebuilt pump. He also has a pump called The Moose Pump.. I've had 2 of them. They are really only for a turboed and intercooled motor. His stock pump would really wake up your motor. Continue to ask questions here. Plenty of help just for the askng. Remember this most of all.... One time we all had the same qusetions as you do. We all started really not knowing much.....

Why would you want more smoke? cookoo That is the reason why all the "tree huggers" are whining and the emissions standards have become a joke! The oil content of diesel keeps dropping as new laws are passed to "cut back" on emissions which means the fuel available at the pump will no longer have the lubrication properties that our older mechanical engines need to run dependably and correctly. I just turned up my pump two flats yesterday just try to have more fuel under higher rpms just to turn it back down less than two hours later (see my thread in The Lounge). Some smoke is okay, but too much makes you a "target" for law enforcement and makes new emission laws easier to pass. Have you heard of the "Cash For Your Clunkers" bill? :dunno

No matter how I word this, it's going to sound insulting, but it's not meant that way. I was 17, and thought I knew more than I did. I'm older now, and realize what my dad meant when he'd say "I've been 17 before, but you've never been 43 before". If you know what you're messing with so much, why ask for advice and then refuse to accept or even consider the advice offered? :dunno These truck will not outrun a PSD, Cummins, or Duramax but in my opinion, they will out work all of those all day long. These engines are cheaper to maintain and can be bought without a monthly payment. The were designed with lower rpm limits than the newer engines, but can run all day working and not damage anything if stock, and modified (with a watchful eye). You need an EGT gauge BEFORE you play with the pump unless you are willing to take the chance on a meltdown at your own expense. I have a turboed engine with the pump up two flats. Even though I say you need a gauge, I don't have mine hooked up yet. The difference is that I have been warned of the damages that can result from pushing the limits too far and have no one but myself to blame if I meltdown my motor. Smoke equals higher EGTs, and higher EGTs equal meltdown... Plain and simple. As for a gauge, you get what you pay for. Do you want to risk your $1,400 investment to a cheap import made gauge when you can spend a little extra and have better peace of mind? Get a good gauge and watch it like a hawk until you "learn" how the truck handles and reacts to the added fuel. 1,200 degrees is the "agreed" upon EGT limit. You can get away with more, but you might not too. Each engine is different, but without an EGT gauge, you have no clue what's going on. Would you cross a highway with a blindfold over your eyes and ear plugs in your ears?

do yourself a favor.
before you get fustrated and all over the lack of power these motors put out(and you will), sell what you have while it's worth something and get yourself a PSD.

x2 If you want something with more power and easy "plug and play" hp and torque gains, sell the IDI and buy a PSD. These engines were built and designed in a completely different era of trucks and never were a big hp or torque producer. I have no doubts about my truck being able to tow anything that I've backed up to. I might not get there as fast, but I will get there.

i agree with all of you. mostly k williams1982. i dont know as much as you guys do about these trucks but i prolly know more about these trucks than most 17 year olds do. ive been around diesel my whole life and i love them.

I was just wondering if there was nayway to make the truck perform a lil better then it does now. im not ****** and moanin about the truck as it is... i love it, its got plenty of guts and i like this truck more then PSD its juat the whole feel of the truck. might not have as much balls but its got a sound and feel like no other and it really is a good work truck.

Add a turbo, some gauges, and then turn up the fuel. A turbo still won't make these race trucks, but it is a vast improvement. After the turbo, add an intercooler to keep the air entering the engine cooler. You will lose a little boost, but be gaining more power off less boost than lots of hot boost. I see the loss of boost as a benefit in my case because my heads aren't studded down yet and I don't want to "lift" a head by boosting too far. I can easily hit 10 psi (and more if wanted), but I try to keep it around 2-8 psi under most conditions. Like I said earlier, my EGT gauge isn't hooked up yet, so I try not to push it more than I need to. Not saying I don't "play around", but I try to be moderate and respect the throttle pedal.

I love these trucks. The suspension can handle a lot more than the newer stock trucks. I have hauled 2,900 lbs of wood in the bed of my truck, and about 9,000 lbs of soil in the bed another time (I didn't know how much it weighed at the time I got loaded... :D).
