Has anyone ever put a 6.9/7.3 IDI in a Dodge W series?

His post #8 where he mentioned putting a IDI in a Thunderbird and Lincoln, both 70s models, kind of gave it away. I do have to agree with Fender here. Putting a IDI in one IS a cool idea and I have thought about it before. It's too bad that I REALLY don't want to have to tag and insure another vehicle. I've seen some pretty nice looking 70s model LTDs and Thunderbirds on Facebook Market place. They weren't even too badly priced.
I just think it would be cool to have an IDI powered Lincoln town car. As of now, I’m trying looking for someone who has put an IDI in a 70s or 80s Dodge truck, but once o figure that one out, I’d like to put one in a full sized Lincoln or Mercury car.

I would too. My problem is that they usually have a much higher price tag than a Thunderbird or LTD so I'd use one of those. I'd be happy with a N/A engine and a E4OD. It would be just to cruise down the highway well.

Nope, never seen anything like that. Cummins engines in Ford trucks are not uncommon, though. Even Ford put them in some of their larger trucks, from the factory. Hmm, I wonder why they would do that when they already had the Powerstroke?

I did have a gasser F350SD 4x4 with the V10 and ZF5, that I thought about putting a big block Chevy in. But I decided the Dana 50 front probably wouldn't stand up to a 454, and the project wasn't worth the price of a kingpin 60. So I sold it and bought another Cummins truck.

Power curve options. In stock form the ISB 6.7 outperformed the powerstrokes... Until probably the 6.7 powerstroke came out. I asked a buddy who worked at a Ford dealership once why they ran Cummins in the F650s and above. Answer I was given was because its what customers requested. I believe past 2016 it was no longer an option. Powerstroke only.

International wasn’t thrilled about Ford using their engines in the medium duty market, where International already had a presence with their own trucks. So Ford had to make a separate deal with other manufacturers for their medium duty line, which wasn’t too difficult as Ford was already buying diesel engines for their larger trucks elsewhere prior to their deal with International.

In 1975, the IH light line of pickups was discontinued before the IDI began development, in 1978, and shortly after that, in the early 80s, Ford was asking around about the light duty diesel engines available from other manufacturers. As the Cummins B series didn’t begin production until 1984 (for industrial versions), Ford was primarily looking at CAT at first, whom they had done business with in their medium duty line. But, CAT also didn’t have an engine suitable for a light duty truck, and since Ford and CAT couldn’t agree on terms for a joint operation to design and build such an engine (largely because CAT wanted way more money than Ford was willing to spend, among other things they disagreed on, for example, engine paint color) which forced Ford to look elsewhere. As the IDI had begun its design phase with International in ‘78, followed by their first prototype in ‘80, and the engine largely met Ford’s criteria, a deal was made, in 1982, to begin offering the IDI as a factory option for ‘83 model year trucks, for the F250 and F350 trucks. And the rest, is history.

Ironically, the original HEUI system used on the 7.3 PSD was a joint effort between CAT and International, for the PSD (T444E), DT series 1995-2003, except in some stationary applications that were emissions exempt after the diesel emissions standards changes of 03. CAT used the HEUI system in the 3126, and some early versions of the C7 and C9 engines. There was an extremely limited run of 3408 and 3412 engines with HEUI, (big V8 and big V12) but I think only for a couple of years in the late 90s.

Here's a little bit more involving the PSD/T444E. This came from a friend who used to sell Mac tools and drove a 4700 series box truck with a T444E. He told me that there's a big difference between the PCMs. International kept their "programming", for lack of a better term, proprietary. You could go into the T444E PCM to get more power out of it, but it had to be through an International dealer and it cost BIG bucks. He left his alone and dealt with it. I have no confirmation on that, but I do trust him. I believe what he told me.

The same is true for the DT series
