It’s been awhile since I’ve posted but I’m facing a problem with my 1983 F250 with a 6.9 IDI diesel. I had a local mechanic change engines in my truck and noticed that my temperature gauge isn’t working since they worked on it. Having asked a similar question concerning the gauge not working on one of my early Ford diesels, I remembered the location of the temperature sensor from that post. Temperature sensor is in place, but the wire is not . Has anyone the information needed to locate where the wire feeds from and a possible trace color(s)? I don’t want to go through another engine change due to overheating issues such as caused the engine replacement before. I know the gauge works as it worked the day my radiator blew out and got my head gaskets.
It would be grand if someone could share photos of the wire location and wire coming out of the firewall/loom.
Thank you

I just looked at my 1985. The temp gauge wire looks like it's dark (black?) with a red(dish?) stripe. It will be in the main wire harness connector on the passenger's side of the engine compartment. I guess I'll say it before anyone else does. Your best bet is to install an aftermarket gauge. It will be more accurate.

Thank you for your answer. I’ll look and see if I can find mine. I’m heading back to the mechanic Monday and I’ll let him know what you said. He and his helper had quite a task as they finished the job that I paid another person to change engines and he disappeared after pulling the engine . They had to search through buckets of bolts and parts just to finish the installation of my replacement engine. They didn’t get to see where everything went and had to figure everything out. Sure want to monitor the temperature to keep the engine going for another 40 years!

Officially the diagrams show the wire being a red with black dots wire. Looks like they had a separate wire and bulb on the early trucks. Later on they tied the overheat sensor into the temp gauge wiring. It pegged the gauge when the overheat switch activated.
