First of all I have to say, these timing meters, no matter what kind, are ingenious!
Anyway. MWFI was great about sending a new pump. Great people and would recommend to anyone.

So when we first started the truck, untimed, it sounded ALOT better than with the last pump.
So then we hooked up the MT1480 to the truck and did an initial scan. It was reading -1. So we turned the pump with the engine running until we could see it read 1-1.5 and looked where the mark was. Shut the engine off and bolted it up at that mark. Checked again and it was on 1.5. Called it good and took it for a drive.
It takes off MUCH better than the last one and is much quieter driving. It does still smoke a little at the pipe under WOT in just about any gear.
Doesnt seem like it has as much power as it did when we first got it, but DEF. runs better than before.

So my question now is, do we need to still work on the timing or is this the best we're gonna get?

Well, it was pretty ballsy to mess with the timing with the engine running, not recommended but you got away with it, good for you. Timing spec using the luminosity method is 1.5*ATDC, that sounds like where you are, I would leave it there. Where is the fuel screw, has it been turned up any at all? If you have a turbo you need to get a pyrometer and bump the fuel delivery up just a bit and you'll get some more power, but you might get a tad bit more smoke too. Nothing wrong with leaving everything as is either.

Yea, I told my dad he was supposed to shut it off, but we didnt know which was + or - on the meter so we had to try something.
Its a factory turbo, so its got a completely different pump from the standard 7.3.
It shouldnt need any turning up as far as I know.
