This engine was a great runner. It was out of my 94. Made 206/444. That was before cam install. I only ran it for 3 weeks after cam install and an external reseal. Then oil consumption went crazy with lots of blowby

Yeah, considering the cylinder volume, I wouldn't think that a crack like that would matter, even if it *did* leak.

You are more concerned with the massive area of the piston rings - my guess is those piston rings aren't in good shape at all.

Sure sorry to see damage like this. My thoughts are we "should" replace springs whenever any cam is replaced. Call it insurance or what you will. At the very least check the old springs for open and closed pressure.

Agreed. I started checking valve springs routinely after I had a batch of Type III VW engine rebuilds come up with valve problems due to bad springs.
