Evidence that rust exists on the West Coast as well...

Hello!

I've mentioned before that I've had some rust problems with my '84 extended-cab...she spent many years being sandblasted in the desert before I moved to the coast. And...I noticed a hole in my roof not too long ago. Realizing that the rainy season is hopefully coming soon, I figured I'd better do something to seal the hole up. I knew that there were other rust bubbles on the cab roof, and figured I'd do well to break them down and see how many holes I have to deal with.

Here you go...this is how things look from above after I chipped the rust bubbles off:

My poor truck... But, hey, I'm well on the way to having a 3/4 ton diesel truck that's also a convertible

If I had had half a brain, I would have taken care of that before I moved here. There was a fair amount of surface rust when I inherited the truck, and the paint was very weak...and, of course, that surface rust is not just on the surface anymore

The really funny thing is, when I moved to the coast, I was warned about how the salt air/fog would get into all the nooks and crannies where I couldn't get to to paint/rustproof, and eat the truck from within. That actually hasn't really happened yet...the truck's a rust-bucket at this point, but every spot of rust on her is in a place where the paint was weak or missing to begin with. Actually, most of the rust spots on the hood started out as bird droppings...I've never been as good about keeping the truck clean as I should, and I think the acid in the bird droppings ate through the paint, giving the rust a good spot to start on...

Common knowledge... East coast trucks rust from the bottom up and west coast from the top down. I'll take new skin on top on a simple body like a truck, that nobody ever sees the roof, any day over new bedsides, bed floor, rockers, cab floors, and cab corners. If you're upset about the rust just think, it could be worse.

time to remove the front and back window, and replace the entire roof!
you can always hollywood top it!

2 rolls of gorilla tape, applied crosswise from back to front, like shingling a roof, good for winter. OR get some stainless speed tape for aircraft, I did the edges of my 79 roof and it was there for 3 years, same scenario Tehachapi truck, 3 yrs on oregon coast AFTER I painted it and it was toast. Our salt air is wetter than yours.
