I changed my IP pump and cannot get enough timing out of it.
I removed the pump via pulling it out of the timing gear. I did not pull the timing gear and cover off.
With the IP pump pulled all the way over to the passenger fender, I can only get 1 degree BTDC.
My question is, "can the timing gear actually move a tooth inside the timing cover?

Thanks

The gear can't jump time with the cover in place. You are rotated as far as possible to pass side. What is the relation of the static timing lines on the pump and gear cover? They shouldn't be way apart, maybe 1/16". There is the chance the gear itself was out of time before you owned the truck. Good questions asked already. How are you timing, where did you get the pump?

Pump came from Autozone. They were the only ones that had one when I needed it.
As for static timing, the line on the timing cover gear and IP pump were installed directly on each other. --
It fires up with ease, but has smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Pulse was taken from #1 injector line. Truck running at 2000 rpm.

Please tell us what cylinder hard line you used. I know you posted the number one cylinder was used but tell us where that is. Reason I ask this is a member years ago was using the first cylinder on the drivers side of the engine nearest the radiator. Sadly that cylinder is number 2. Now tell us what mark on the damper timing tab you used. The short fat tube is the zero degree top dead center mark. We do not use that. The tall skinny tube is the 20 degrees advance mark and we use that one. You mentioned smoke. Tell us what color it is and do you see it all the time or just during hard acceleration.

to the OP,
i woukld rent a meter from Gary, aka icanfixall,
i had lots of trouble when i started timing these engines, i was getting irratic timing like youre seeing to a degree.
turns out i fubared the ip gear and was off 2 teeth.
sadly, the only way to find out forsure is to tear the front of the engine apart.
i tried a bore scope, and other methods to no success

I used the the injector line to the front cylinder on the passenger side. I used the fat tube with the zero degree TDC mark.
I believe the smoke is a white-ish/grey. I'll have to look again.
Yes, we set the timing meter at 9 degrees on the gun.

Its been awhile since I used a ferret' check the stickie on timing with a ferret.
Might help ya.
That being said... Anyone have feedback on the vatozone ip's?
That could be the problem, manny times I've had to do several returns to get a good part.

See if you can get timing tape. Lay it on the harmonic as in my thread.

WHAT TIMING LIGHT ARE YOU USING????

Set timing light to 0 amd retry.

Offset in light could be issue.

Timing tape dont lie.

Other issue could but not likely a slipped outter ring on balancer.

Also ensure ferret clamp is as close as possible to injector.
