Well as I am new to performance upgrading on a diesel. I was wondering if anyone knows if the IDI motor responds to Cam shaft profile changes like a gas motor? If so where can a person get a cam either re-ground or new with a different profile than stock? What about some Roller Rockers? Balancing the motor? Porting Heads? Injector upgrade? IP upgrades?

I believe I can get a head stud Kit from ARP which I plan on utilizing.

I am looking at Hot Rodding an IDI 7.3 Turbo, I'll add a intercooler and water injection. Any other suggestions are welcomed.

What would be a decent power both HP and Torque to expect from this engine?

me thinks--with a turbo engine--cams are going to make very little diff--because you aint spinning 8000 grand---now the intercooler--yes--cool the air mix down--should help pyro temps--and keep combustion temps down--roller rockers--could help---ip and inj upgrade--ya--thats what ken does for the turbo pump--and other ips also--------porting---turbo--doubtful much diff---

I am looking for a profile that would work well for bottom end not top end.

Without having a 7.3s specs at 0 lift or .050. lift, lift amount, lobe center, valve opening duration, symmetrical lobes, or asymmetrical lobes, lobe timing ETC I cannot begin to understand how and where the stock one is working best.

All IC engines are air pumps be gas or diesel. They should respond in similar ways to changes in how that pump is timed.

Again I would like to know if anyone knows of an after market cam.

Call delta cams in tacoma WA , they reground mine with a profile that gives more torque on na engines and I put it in my turbo 7.3 and love it, 17 mpg empty if I can keep my foot out of it.
They have never steered me wrong.

This is what the OEM cam looks like...(top of ramp) intake open 17.2 degrees BTDC and closed at 42.8 degrees ABDC.... Exhaust open 51.2 degrees BBDC and closed at 20.8 degrees ATDC. Intake lift is 0.2535 and exhaust is 0.25308. I really don't think they are this accurate being down to 100 thousands on the exhaust lift. I can see the intake lift being down to 1/2 thousands but even thats a very small amount.

I offer a simple reminder; valves and pistons tend to fail when forced to try to share the same space.

Ya Ha.:rotflmao Thats what Plasterscene or soft clay is for...Checking those clearances PRIOR to final assembly thus hopefully avoiding that situation altogether.

Anyone whom assembles an engine (Gas) or Diesel and does not properly check all clearances IMO is opening themselves up to a THERMO NUCLEAR MELTDOWN of grandiose proportions.
