Block is now masked off and soaking in easy off oven cleaner.

I will be painting the block red, oilpan gray, and heads gray.

Also bearings, pistons, rings and valve springs all showed up.

Well tonight I got the block painted. I also did the crankshaft polish.

Doing some measuring for clearances.

How important is the wrist pin clearances? New pistons and wrist pins.

Guys we have a slight problem. Top piston ring.

The top piston ring does not fit correctly in the piston. On the old pistons it is a beveled ring and they fit fine, but the new ones are square with a little bevele.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Can I just reuse my old top ring?
They look perfectly fine.

Use some calipers measure the width and thickness of new and old rings. If you don't have digital calipers, pick up a set for $10 or $20 from Auto Zone or Amazon. Report back with details.

Old ring is .1125
New is .1105

Hard to see but the the old ring is beveled and the new pistons are beveled too.

Small side of the old beveled ring is .0890

Well I have found that I need keystones top ring for the new pistons. There is only 2 brand available.

The wrong ones are the engine tech brand. They say top ring is not keystone.

The other is Hastings and they do not say that they aren’t but don’t say they are.

How do I tell if they are top ring keystoned?

Just going to throw this out there. You will be better served using a micrometer for these measurements. Good quality calipers with calibration certs are only accurate to around +/- .002" at best. Meaning, every time you take a measurement with them, it could be anywhere with a .004" window.

If a few thousandths of an inch are an issue, then a caliper is not the right tool for the job.

I got great clearance with the new rod bearings I picked up.

The not keystoned rings I had were not able to fit in the groove on the new pistons.

I was able to find that the pistons said to use rings s42104.030

Alright. So measuring valve spring seating for shimming my comp 910 valve springs.

Which one is the intake and which the exhaust? One is clearly longer and the other doesn’t need shimming.

I measured them all out and they seem to be about good on either the exhaust or intake haven’t figured it out.
